Being a Soil Scientist may require a bachelor's degree in agricultural sciences or a related field with at least 5 years of work experience. May direct the work of a small group of employees. Additionally, Soil Scientist relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Typically reports to a senior manager and may be considered the lead for a specific area or unit.     OVERVIEW:

    The Senior Food Scientist will develop, troubleshoot, and commercialize formulations of shelf stable beans and hominy, lead product improvement projects, provide technical data, and maintain document systems. This role will be based out of Atwater CA majorly, and it would involve some travel to the sister plant in Hoopeston IL. The ideal candidate should have the knowledge of Food Process Engineering principles, Design of Experiments Methodology, Food Chemistry and Culinary Science to be successful in this role.

    WHAT YOU'LL DO:

    • Develop formulations of shelf stable beans and hominy from concept to formulation, sample prototypes, heat penetration studies, operations trials, and product launches.
    • Troubleshoot alongside internal teams to address customer concerns by identifying, optimizing, implementing, and monitoring solutions. Interface directly with customers to understand issues and provide technical support.
    • Serve as the technical resource on ingredient functionality and processing applications to internal teams and customers. Relay technical information effectively to non-technical audiences.
    • Comprehend unique ingredients, products, packaging, and equipment to guide internal teams toward the best facility to maximize capacity, efficiency, and growth.
    • Work closely with multi-disciplined teams to approve raw materials and vendors, improve margins, increase supply chain efficiencies, and enhance operational performance.
    • Lead and manage continuous improvement projects such as ingredient substitutions and transitions, SKU rationalization, and processing changes.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams at both plants to merge formulas, Bill of Materials, documentation procedures, and Deacom structures into one universal ERP system.
    • Monitor trending ingredients, products, packaging, and processes. Provide recommendations, formulations, and solutions that drive innovation to keep the product lines relevant in the market.
    • Generate technical information such as nutrition panels, ingredient statements, labels, and/or specifications.
    • Organize product evaluations for competitive analysis, customer presentations, and cross-training.
    • Lead and/or assist in shelf-life trial design, evaluations, recommendations, and reporting.
    • Review, pack, and ship products to customers, sister facilities, and/or suppliers.
    • Maintain updated documents and records in Genesis, Deacom, SharePoint, and other data systems.


    WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

    • Bachelor's or master's degree in food science or food engineering only. Advanced degree not required but it would be an asset. Experience may be considered in lieu of education.
    • Minimum three years of proven R&D experience and leading cross-functional teams through the full product development life cycle in a food/beverage science and/or culinary field, from concept to prototype to optimization to commercialization, and within time and budget constraints.
    • Solid expertise in manufacturing tests and guiding teams through pilot plant trials to market test start-ups to full production launches.
    • Proven record of successful troubleshooting and resolving product complaints from internal teams and diverse customers.
    • Deep knowledge of food ingredients' functionality, applications, low-risk alternatives, and cost-effective solutions.

    • Proficiency with ERP systems like SharePoint and Deacom.

    • Up to 10-20% to make R&D customer samples or support production trials.
