    The Managing Director of Special Education, at KIPP TEAM & Family serves as a key member of the KIPP TEAM & Family Academic Leadership Team. This role will be largely New Jersey-based, with frequent travel to KIPP Miami and periodic travel to other KIPP regions and events as needed. Travel expectations may increase based on demand in a given region.

    The Opportunity

    The Managing Director of Special Education will provide instructional, operational, and administrative leadership in service of students with IEPs and 504s and Multilingual Learners in KIPP Newark, KIPP Camden, and KIPP Miami. Their work will also set the vision and program for Social Work in our schools. This dynamic leader will pursue this work through excellent vision setting and project management expertise. The Managing Managing Director of Special Education will report directly to the Chief Academic Officer and serve as an integral member of the KTAF Academic Leadership Team, which will be responsible for driving the overall direction and strategy for all KIPP TEAM & Family instructional and cultural programming for student support services. The Managing Director of Special Education will work with Regional Directors of Special Education as well as school-based teammates and related service providers to ensure that all of our teachers and providers are offering high-leverage instruction, that all of our students are receiving high-quality support that meets their needs, and that we operate in full compliance with state and local regulations governing special education. The Managing Director of Special Education will collaborate closely with Regional Special Education Directors and their teams to ensure that there are seamless academic and other supports provided to students across schools.

    Job Description:

    Lead the Implementation and Management of a World-Class Academic Program at KIPP Newark, KIPP Camden, and KIPP Miami (KIPP TEAM & Family Charter Schools)

    Design and execute a strategy for serving all students, in full embrace of their academic, behavioral, and/or social needs through the implementation of strong program design, effective professional development, proactive monitoring of inputs, course correction as necessary, and responsive coaching of Special Education leaders across our regions.

    Develop and oversee systems and protocols for quality control and vetting of special education-related processes and systems, curricular materials, assessments, programmatic decision-making, and professional development resources.

    Directly manage the Regional Director of Special Education (solid line) in each of our regions, providing technical support, coaching and development, and accountability towards results.

    Directors of Special Education in each region:

    Coach and develop Special Education Leaders

    By working with special education leaders in a caseload of schools school, build our school-based leaders’ special education content knowledge and instructional leadership capacity -- this may include engaging in walk-throughs, student work analysis protocols, coaching O3s, leading and monitoring team meetings, supporting PD implementation, and more

    Ensure that every one of our schools is creating equitable experiences for all students by increasing support at high-needs campuses when needed, and partnering with other regional stakeholders in order to drive rapid improvement in key academic systems and processes.

    Analyze data and student work from major assessments with instructional leaders at each school and make recommendations about responding to misconceptions and implementing instructional next steps.

    Serve as a point person for the instructional, compliance, and programmatic elements of the Special Education program at your caseload of schools.

    Support the Implementation of the Network’s Vision for Special Education

    Champion the vision of inclusive education for all students enrolled. This includes supporting teams to ensure students are in their least restrictive environment and providing meaningful opportunities to engage with grade-level peers both academically and socially.

    Monitor programs, including instruction, to ensure that students make progress towards individual and grade wide goals and make and communicate changes and improvements to content as needed.

    Monitor and support in the implementation of network wide systems and procedures to ensure compliance with NJ or Florida state law and IDEA regulations, and communicate areas for improvement to teams.

    May be asked to provide specific modifications to curriculum and assessments for students with disabilities K-12.

    Review and respond to assessment data by deploying coaching support to places most in need and/or making adjustments and modifications to curriculum materials.

    Support schools with complex student and family cases as needed.

    Lead and Engage in Professional Development

    As a resident content expert, lead professional development for leaders and teachers in accordance with the annual professional development strategy, including AP Cohort Meetings, One TEAM, One Sound, Leading for Learning, Heartbeat Summit, etc. Note that, depending on the PD strategy, group sizes for professional development sessions may exceed 100 depending on the PD venue.

    Embrace and develop skill in a wide range and methods of professional development and coaching, including real-time feedback, co-teaching and model teaching, observation and debrief, etc.

    Support TEAM meetings, on an as-needed basis including student support team meetings, content team meetings with learning specialists and IEP meetings.

    Engage in research and professional development opportunities within and outside of the team, to continuously grow and develop our team’s knowledge based, spread best practices, and improve on our collective coaching and leadership skills.



    In collaboration with Regional Directors of Special Education, actively respond to data (achievement, observation, perception, etc.) to engage in year-over-year improvement of program, as well as mid-year course corrections as needed.

    Collaborate with Heads of Schools and Teaching & Learning TEAMmates (Academic Leadership Team) to deploy talent and resources (e.g. additional coaching support, model leadership, etc.), based on takeaways from progress monitoring.

    Consistently advocate for the needs and interests of students with special needs in our schools, ensuring that they are actively considered in the development of long-term plans and short-term interventions.

    Provide input and feedback on budget and operations related to special education in each region (e.g. staffing, scheduling, grants management, etc.) in support of meeting state, local, and federal requirements.

    Develop and/or cultivate subject matter expertise across grades and disciplines K-12, in order to inform region-specific academic policies and decision-making about programs.

    Collaborate with the Data Team to develop and monitor outcomes on KIPP dashboards.

    Serve as an Outstanding TEAMmate on the KIPP New Jersey Regional Leadership TEAM

    Collaborate with the Chief Academic Officer, Executive Directors, and Heads of Schools in all regions in order to diagnose and support overall School Health.

    Develop regional strategies for driving improvements in academics, culture, and staff engagement alongside other members of the regional leadership team.

    Serve as a panelist or speaker at region-wide events like Staff Town Halls; One TEAM, One Sound; regional professional development days, etc.

    Participate in EKG Walk-Through processes, to objectively score schools on instructional practice and to generate feedback designed to move schools forward.

    Participate in teacher rubric scoring and rating, to help schools norm their scoring and calibrate the rubric scores for all teachers in a building.

    Participate in and/or lead routine meetings with each region’s leadership team and/or T&L team, to solve tactical matters, engage in strategic work together, build vertical content knowledge and program, etc.

    Participate in routine and non-routine meetings with Heads of Schools, School Leaders, and APs, to solve tactical matters, engage in strategic work together, and respond to the most pressing needs our schools have.
