Speech and Language Pathologist - Nursing Home assesses and treats speech and language disorders and impairments in a nursing home or long term care setting. Conducts patient evaluation of speech and language skills using applicable diagnostic materials and tools. Being a Speech and Language Pathologist - Nursing Home develops treatment plans that utilize appropriate intervention approaches, strategies, and materials. Establishes treatment priorities that include advising, educating and counseling the patient. Additionally, Speech and Language Pathologist - Nursing Home documents assessment and patient progress. Collaborates with physicians, family members, and other clinical providers. May direct support staff in assisting with treatment. Ensures that treatment aligns with patient needs and is within the parameters set by the payer. Requires a master's degree in speech pathology or equivalent. Requires Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) and may require a state license. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. Speech and Language Pathologist - Nursing Home's years of experience requirement may be unspecified. Certification and/or licensing in the position's specialty is the main requirement.   • SUMMARY

     

    Specialists will have knowledge in four interrelated areas: 1) effective speech & language therapy techniques, 2) effective literacy practices and assessments, 3) skills in coordinating and managing speech services, and 4) working with adults, including knowledge of coaching and mentoring techniques.

     

    DUTIES

     

    1. Knowledge of speech and language typical development from birth to adult in multiple areas of articulation, phonology, receptive language, expressive language, fluency, pragmatic language and voice.
    2. Knowledge of disordered speech and language skills in multiple areas of articulation, phonology, receptive language, expressive language, fluency, pragmatic language and voice.
    3. Design and implement a course of remediation for disordered speech and language skill areas.
    4. Prepares daily lesson plans and plans course outlines. 
    5. Schedule IEP meetings and complete all documentation in a timely manner.
    6. Develop and provide procedural guidelines through a speech/language manual.
    7. Consult on assignment and workload/caseload responsibilities.
    8. Create an environment of trust and respect between building staff and the person in the position.
    9. Establish a culture for ongoing improvement.
    10. Collaborate and consult with individual SLPs on specific students, disorders, etc. as needed.
    11. Assist to establish goals for the speech & language program appropriate to each school setting and the learners served.
    12. Provides detailed plans and prepares materials for curriculum taught.
    13. Collect and analyze district data to assess and inform therapy/teaching and learning.
    14. Show professionalism, including integrity, and confidentiality.
    15. Dress in a professional manner.
    16. Supervise students during recess, in hallways, at lunch, before and after school.
    17. Serve on school and district committees.
    18. Knowledge of subject matter.
    19. Knowledge of child growth and development.
    20. Knowledge and use of technology for instruction, planning, recordkeeping, and communications.
    21. Participates in teacher’s meetings and in-services as well as completing the required continuing education training. 
    22. Other duties as assigned by the Building Administrator, Superintendent and/or Board of Education.

     

    QUALIFICATIONS

     

    1. Type 10 Special Teaching grade K-12 Teaching License with an endorsement in Speech/Language Pathology; Speech & Language Impaired as required by the State.
    2. Must be familiar with the use of computers including but not limited to electronic mail, the Internet, word processing, and electronic spreadsheets (Microsoft Office), and Google Drive.
    3. Establish and maintain effective and courteous working relationships with those contacted in the course of work (students, parents, and staff).
    4. Ability to understand and follow basic oral and written instructions.
    5. Ability to communicate to students, parents and staff in an acceptable/courteous manner
    6. Must be able to work as a team, including sharing ideas.
