Speech and Language Pathologist - Nursing Home assesses and treats speech and language disorders and impairments in a nursing home or long term care setting. Conducts patient evaluation of speech and language skills using applicable diagnostic materials and tools. Being a Speech and Language Pathologist - Nursing Home develops treatment plans that utilize appropriate intervention approaches, strategies, and materials. Establishes treatment priorities that include advising, educating and counseling the patient. Additionally, Speech and Language Pathologist - Nursing Home documents assessment and patient progress. Collaborates with physicians, family members, and other clinical providers. May direct support staff in assisting with treatment. Ensures that treatment aligns with patient needs and is within the parameters set by the payer. Requires a master's degree in speech pathology or equivalent. Requires Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) and may require a state license. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department.     The purpose of a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) is to assess, diagnose, treat, and provide support to individuals with communication disorders, speech impairments, language delays, voice disorders, fluency disorders, and swallowing difficulties.

    The primary goals of an SLP are communication Improvement, speech clarity and intelligibility, language development, swallowing and feeding function, voice rehabilitation, Fluency Enhancement, Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), Collaboration and Advocacy.

    Overall, the purpose of an SLP is to enhance an individual's communication abilities, facilitate functional and effective communication, and improve their overall quality of life. SLPs play a vital role in helping individuals overcome communication challenges and reach their full potential in personal, academic, and professional settings.

    The Responsibilities of the Speech/Language Pathologist include but are not limited to:

    • Assessing and Evaluating residents with communication disorders to determine their specific needs. This involves conducting interviews, administering standardized tests, and using other assessment tools to gather information about a person's speech, language, voice, fluency, and swallowing abilities.
    • Providing therapy and intervention services to residents with communication disorders. Employing various techniques and exercises to target specific speech, language, voice, fluency, or swallowing difficulties. Therapy sessions may be conducted one-on-one or in group settings, depending on the resident's needs and goals.
    • Working with individuals who have experienced communication difficulties due to strokes, traumatic brain injuries, or other neurological disorders.
    • Assessing and treating individuals with swallowing disorders (dysphagia) or feeding difficulties.
    • Recommending and implementing augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems for individuals who are unable to communicate verbally or have severe speech impairments. Working with clients to select appropriate AAC devices and support their effective use.
    • Staying updated on the latest research and evidence-based practices in their field through continuing education, attending conferences, and participating in professional development activities.
    The Qualifications & Skills of the Speech/Language Pathologist include:

    • A master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology or Communication Sciences and Disorders is generally required to practice as an SLP.
    • Certification or Licensing from a recognized professional organization, such as the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).
    • Valid professional license and registration for the state of MN and be able to practice independently.
    • Experience with long-term care and/or geriatric care is preferred.
