Sponsored Programs Director directs and oversees externally funded programs for a university/college such as research programs and scholarship programs. Responsible for managing the administrative activities of the program including identifying funding sources, acquiring funding, setting program policies and objectives, and allocating resources. Being a Sponsored Programs Director requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to top management. The Sponsored Programs Director manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Sponsored Programs Director typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required. Weekend and after hours are possible when meeting CAS needs and agency deadlines. Professional development is needed to keep up to date on federal guidelines, grant and contract negotiation, administration, auditing requirements, etc.

Bachelor's degree in Research Administration, Business, accounting, or other if extensive grants and contracts experience warrants. Five years of sponsored programs experience. Combination of specialized education, training, and experience in research administration is desired. Relevant experience includes proposal submission, budget development, contract negotiation, and budget and report management.
Ability to manage unpredictable and at times demanding workloads while meeting deadlines and providing high quality service. Knowledge and understanding of policies and procedures of federal, state, and private funding agencies, as well as state, federal, and institutional regulations. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work effectively and professionally with diverse stakeholders, including staff, faculty, administrators, and external sponsors.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's Degree in Research Administration, Business, Related Accounting, or other if extensive grants and contracts experience warrants. Ten years of related experience. Certified Research Administrator certification.
Experience supervising, mentoring, or training other sponsored programs employees.
Proficient with electronic grants management systems, Cayuse, and Ellucian Banner Finance.
Experience creating and interpreting administrative/fiscal reports for grants and contracts.
Membership and active participation in relevant professional organizations such as the National Council of University Research Administrators (NCURA), Society of Research Administrators International (SRA), or National Organization of Research Development Professionals (NORDP).
