Staff Nurse - RN - Infection Control performs hospital-wide surveillance and data collection as part of an overall infection-control program. Investigates possible incidences of infection and implements remedial action.     Position Summary:

    • This position reports to the Director of Nursing
    • The Treatment/Infection Control Nurse applies dressings, treats wounds and provides consistent monitoring and tracking infections within the facility
    • Demonstrates quality and effectiveness in work habits and clinical practice
    • Remains flexible to changing systems
    • Treats residents, families, visitors, peers and physicians with consideration and respect
    • Communicates concerns appropriately using the established chain of command
    • Must work well under stress or tight deadlines
    • Must work well with supervisors, co-workers, patients/residents, family members and visitors

    District Responsibility: 

    • Maintains all principles of confidentiality according to District policy and as required by State and Federal agencies
    • Follows guidelines and practices identified in the Employee Handbook
    • Is a leader in continuous quality improvement activities within the Nursing Department and the District
    • Participates in the development of skills criteria annually and as needed
    • Complies with annual PPD testing
    • Maintains responsibility for own professional development
    • Assesses own performance using insight and constructive feedback to set goals and to enrich knowledge and skills to perform role
    • Support of the District Mission and Values
    • Demonstrate Respect, Professionalism and Courtesy to all patients, visitors, other providers and coworkers, as delineated in the LVMC “Commitment to Care”

    Position Duties/Responsibility:

    • Plans, implements and evaluates the Treatment and Infection Control Program
    • Gives prescribed treatments and observes reactions, adjusting to resident’s condition
    • Performs treatments and documents sight status in respective resident’s progress notes and weekly summaries
    • Documents in resident’s treatment and health records treatments given and marked changes in resident’s status as prescribed by nursing staff policy
    • Develops prospective and retrospective surveillance strategies for nosocomial, community acquired and criteria poor infections and performs such surveillance
    • Develops forms and record keeping systems for surveillance activities and prepares appropriate statistical reports from collected data to identify and analyze trends of infections.
    • Investigates potential infection hazards and deviations of hospital infection above the baseline: recommends and coordinates the implementation of appropriate changes; and evaluates the effectiveness of prevention and control measures
    • Develops and reviews instructional material for infection control educational programs and coordinates policies and regulations, including OSHA TB and blood borne pathogen standards.
    • Prepare and present a report monthly at Quality Assurance Committee Meetings
    • Provides support to in-services for facility wide education.  Ensures that new personnel are provided with an orientation and annual infection control training
    • Current in the field of infection control including continuing education with the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, Inc. (APIC)
    • Other duties assigned by the Director of Nursing

    Essential Functions: 

    • The ability to maintain a current California State nursing license
    • The ability to document all treatments done and any changes of condition in the resident file
    • The ability to be supervised
    • The ability to work as a team
    • The ability to have positive personal interactions with staff, patients/residents and visitors

    Position Qualifications: 

    • Certification/License: Current State of California RN license, BLS required from the American Heart Association, certification with the Association for Professional in Infection Control (APIC) and Wound Care Education Institute is required or, alternatively, the incumbent is in the process of obtaining the certifications, to be attained within 3 years of assuming this role
    • Experience: 6 months recent, successful work experience as an RN or as deemed by the Director of Nursing                     
    • Skills/Ability: Demonstrates competent professional nursing skills including: medication administration, assessments and documentation. Able to verbally communicate effectively to residents, staff and visitors. Able to write legibly and informatively in resident records. Capable of planning and supervising the Nurse Assistants’ daily activities
