Staff Nurse - RN - Surgical First Assistant provides direct patient care to surgical patients throughout the perioperative period. Assists surgeon during surgical procedures by positioning skin preparation, providing wound exposure, performing tissue dissection, suturing, and other surgical tasks. Being a Staff Nurse - RN - Surgical First Assistant administers medications and IV treatments as necessary. Participates in discharge planning and counsels patients and caregivers on appropriate post-operative care. Additionally, Staff Nurse - RN - Surgical First Assistant requires a bachelor's degree. Requires Certified Nurse Operating Room (CNOR). Requires Registered Nurse First Assistant (CRNFA). Requires Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. Staff Nurse - RN - Surgical First Assistant's years of experience requirement may be unspecified.     JOB SUMMARY:  

    Responsible for providing surgical assistance to physicians during the perioperative event, promoting patient safety and positive outcomes.  The RN First Assist functions under the direct supervision of the attending surgeon.  Assists the physician with surgical tasks such as tying, retracting, clamping, suturing, dissecting tissue, performing incisions and wound closure. Functions as a team member during the preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative phases of surgery. Supports System and Nursing Strategic Plans, Relationship-Based Care, and Shared Leadership.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:

    • Displays cognitive, psychomotor, and affective behavior that demonstrates accountability and responsibility for identifying and meeting the needs of the patient and of the attending surgeon.
    • Exhibits knowledge about positioning with regard to not only optimum exposure but also positive patient outcomes.
    • Knowledgeable with regard to patient preparation and draping of the operative site in accordance with the recommended standards of practice.
    • Knowledgeable with regard to proper functioning of equipment or instrumentation that may be required.
    • Exhibits knowledge with regard to proper tissue handling.
    • Under the direct supervision of a surgeon, assists with the performance of surgical procedures and general patient care in the operating room in accordance with established nursing protocol, policies and procedures.  Observable duties may include:  Assisting with positioning, prepping and draping of the patient.  Tissue handling including making incisions, retracting, dissecting, tying, ligating, stapling, suturing and providing hemostasis.  Endoscopic or open harvesting of the saphenous vein during arterial bypass procedures and preparation of the vein bypass.
    • Anticipates the surgeon needs.
    • Anticipates any special needs of the patient with regard to comfort and safety.
    • Maintains certifications.
    • Seeks and supports opportunities for professional growth and development.
    • Offers support and feedback to peers and staff.  Applies principles of caring and healing in interactions with patients and families and with colleagues.
    • Serves as coach and mentor for less experienced colleagues.
    • Offers consistent and visible support to team members.
    • Professional standards and current research/evidence-based practice drive decision-making.
    • Supports Shared Leadership and encourages staff participation on unit-based teams.
    • Strives to achieve excellence of service as described in the CARE Manual.
    • Responds to the following Shore Health System codes: Code Red (in the immediate area), Code Pink (when called), Code Yellow (when called).
    • Responsible for honest behavior in all matters.  To the best of the employee’s knowledge and understanding, complies with all Federal and State laws and regulations.
    • Maintains the privacy and security of all confidential and protected health information.  Uses and discloses only that information which is necessary to perform the function of the job.

    Qualifications
    • Meets licensing requirements to practice registered nursing in the State of Maryland. BSN required.
    • Completion of accredited RNFA course/internship that meets the criteria established by AORN for RN First assistant programs.
    • Minimum of 3-5 years of diversified OR experience.
    • RNFA Certification required when eligible to sit for exam. 
    • Current CNOR certification and CRNFA.
