Staff Nurse - RN - Surgical First Assistant provides direct patient care to surgical patients throughout the perioperative period. Assists surgeon during surgical procedures by positioning skin preparation, providing wound exposure, performing tissue dissection, suturing, and other surgical tasks. Being a Staff Nurse - RN - Surgical First Assistant administers medications and IV treatments as necessary. Participates in discharge planning and counsels patients and caregivers on appropriate post-operative care. Additionally, Staff Nurse - RN - Surgical First Assistant requires a bachelor's degree. Requires Certified Nurse Operating Room (CNOR). Requires Registered Nurse First Assistant (CRNFA). Requires Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). Job Summary:
Functions as a first assistant during operative and other invasive procedures in accordance with credentials, privileges, experience, education and competency verification. Under the direction and supervision of the surgeon provides aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. Under the direction and supervision of the surgeon, performs preoperative and postoperative duties to better facilitate proper patient care.
Required Skills:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology and surgical technique/instrumentation.
2. Intraoperative competency behaviors including handling of tissue, providing of instruments, control of blood loss and suturing.
3. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
4. Ability to anticipate and react calmly to emergency situations.
5. Ability to recognize surgical hazards and initiate appropriate corrective and preventative actions.
6. Ability to follow written protocols.
7. Ability to effectively communicate and interact clearly with surgeon and others Associates.
8. Ability to establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public.
9. Understands/satisfies the needs of the patient population appropriate of age of patient served (adult, geriatric, pediatric and neonates).
10. Bilingual English and Spanish preferred.
Required Experience:
A. Work Experience:
Two years of experience as a Certified Surgical Technologist required. Experience as a Surgical First Assistant preferred.
B. License/Registration/Certification:
1. Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA), Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA), Surgical Assistant, Certified, (SA-C) or equivalent certification required.
2. Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) required.
3. Current CPR training.
C. Education and Training:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Graduate from an accredited surgical technologist program required.
Bachelor degree in related medical science field preferred.
