Staff Nurse - RN - Surgical First Assistant provides direct patient care to surgical patients throughout the perioperative period. Assists surgeon during surgical procedures by positioning skin preparation, providing wound exposure, performing tissue dissection, suturing, and other surgical tasks. Being a Staff Nurse - RN - Surgical First Assistant administers medications and IV treatments as necessary. Participates in discharge planning and counsels patients and caregivers on appropriate post-operative care. Additionally, Staff Nurse - RN - Surgical First Assistant requires a bachelor's degree. Requires Certified Nurse Operating Room (CNOR). Requires Registered Nurse First Assistant (CRNFA). Requires Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). SCHEDULE:Â Full time 40 hours per week, 5 eight hour shifts, Day/Night rotator, with rotating weekends, holidays, and on-call.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Performs a full range of tasks in providing nursing care to assigned patients Performs individualized nursing assessments for each assigned patient
Develops/updates care plans utilizing established standards of care which include physician prescribed therapies and common nursing measures derived from disease related/therapy/personal needs
Organizes/coordinates patient care and collaborates with staff to implement patient care plans. Also, participates in staff/patient care conferences
Assists in clinical education/orientation of other staff; guides and supervises assigned personnel in the delivery of patient care; performs related duties as required
 DUTIES DURING INTRAOPERATIVE PHASE INCLUDE:
Using instruments and medical devices.
Providing surgical site exposure.
Handling and/or cutting tissue.
Providing hemostasis.
Suturing
Wound management.
Performs related duties as required
 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the principles and practices of nursing
Knowledge of relevant health center policies and procedures
Considerable interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills
Ability to establish priorities and manage effectively
 POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates must possess and maintain or be eligible for a current RN license in the State of CT; must prove graduation from an accredited nursing program.
Must have at least 1-2 years Registered Nurse experience working in an operating room over the last 5 years.
Registered Nurse First Assist Certification.
 SPECIAL REQUIRMENT:
Current BLS Certification. Must possess and maintain American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for healthcare providers. This is the only accepted credential.
Other CPR/AED credentials may be accepted at hire but incumbents will be required to obtain American Heart Association (AHA) BLS certification within six (6) months of hire and
 STRONGLY PREFERRED:
BSN or active enrollment in a BSN program
Two (2) or more years first assist experience.
