Being a Sterile Supply Attendant prepares supplies and equipment for use during patient procedures. Operates autoclaves and other equipment to sterilize instruments and equipment. Additionally, Sterile Supply Attendant inspects and assembles instruments, equipment, trays, and packs. Requires a high school diploma or its equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Sterile Supply Attendant possesses a moderate understanding of general aspects of the job. Works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area. Instrument Technician - Graveyard Shift

  • Sterile Processing Services of America (SPSA) was founded to assist hospitals, surgery centers, and clinics with their medical device and instrument sterilization processing requirements out of its two processing facilities in Southern and Northern California. Significant investments have been, and will continue to be made in facilities, processing technology, capacity, distribution, leadership, and employee development to be the market leader in offsite surgical instrument sterilization processing in the state of California. Our aim is to be a trusted medical device and instrument sterilization processing provider to the medical community.

    The SPSA Instrument Technician is responsible for identification, correct disassembly, cleaning, decontamination and reassembly of instruments used for various surgical procedures.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    • Perform instrument processing functions according to AAMI Standards and SPSA’s published Work Instructions (WI’s) as well as Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s).
    • Process incoming instruments in our controlled access Soil Sort (decontamination) area, while wearing appropriate PPE attire.
    • Verify and accurately assemble instruments, per client requests.
    • Properly document missing instruments according to written SOPs.
    • Ensure best care and handing practice of each customer owned item.
    • Inspect and ensure that each instrument is in good working order before placing in-tray or pack for shipment.
    • Assembly and disassembly of instruments while maintaining all quality criteria.
    • Effectively operate machinery such as washers, sterilizers and other related equipment.
    • Complete necessary paperwork and computer functions, as appropriate for daily work.
    • Adhere to SPSA’s Quality standards.
    • Make recommendations to management for possible improvement.
    • Keep the work area neat and clean.
    • Effectively interface with operations personnel, distribution and others as appropriate.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    WORKING CONDITIONS:

    Work is performed in a fast-paced indoor area with little exposure to dust and high temperatures; moderate exposure to excessive noise; climate-controlled environment; and controlled access. Frequent exposure to bio-hazardous materials and strong odorous chemicals or elements.

    Requirements

    EXPERIENCE:

    Minimum of 2 years of instrument experience required. Must have working knowledge of how various instruments are used during surgical procedures. Previous Hospital, Surgery Center or Clinic Sterile Processing experience preferred.

    EDUCATION:

    High school diploma or GED required. Instrument Technician Certification preferred.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

    • General knowledge of surgical instruments.
    • Knowledge of steam sterilization process.
    • Knowledge of washer disinfectant and other related equipment.
    • Have good manual dexterity and detail-orientation.
    • Must be able to multi-task.
    • Must have or be willing to obtain necessary vaccines and testing required to work with soiled items.
    • Basic knowledge of personal computer/data processing.
    • Work effectively under pressure and within deadlines.
    • Willing and capable of working with others.
    • Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors and coworkers as appropriate.
    • Ability to read and understand applicable Work Instructions and Standard Operating Procedures.
