D471 is seeking highly motivated candidates to support structural engineering efforts on commissioned submarines and training platforms. D471 Structural Engineering primarily supports the Reactor Plant Planning Yard (RPPY), Moored Training Ship Support Yard (MTSSY), S8G Prototype Design Agent (S8G PDA), and S6G Moored Training Ship Lead Design Yard (S6G MTS LDY) programs and consists of 13 engineers working in a team environment.
Areas of cognizance include propulsion plant structures, arrangements, and shielding on LOS ANGELES, OHIO, SEAWOLF, and VIRGINIA Class commissioned submarines, S5W and S6G moored training ships, and the S8G Prototype. Engineers in D471 Structural Engineering evaluate and resolve technical requests from the submarine fleet or shipyards, incorporate new designs and advanced technologies via Ship Alteration, perform research studies, complete calculations, and propose improvements to Naval Reactors. Engineers also function as project engineers, overseeing all aspects of engineering tasks, including assurance of first-time technical quality, maintaining budgets and schedules, and interfacing with design services and other engineering organizations. Engineers will also directly interface with internal and external customers, including NAVSEA 08, naval shipyards, Nuclear Power Training Unit at Charleston, SC and the Naval Nuclear Laboratory.
The successful candidate will be onboarded to gain familiarity with the group’s areas of cognizance, trained on necessary processes/procedures and analysis software, and continuously supported with regular development meetings to ensure skill and career progression. Technical expertise and knowledge of propulsion plant systems, welding, fasteners, materials, and general methods of manufacturing will be developed by frequently using these skills while performing technical evaluations.
