The Sr. Project Engineer – Structural is responsible for independently leading and performing the data collection, analysis, design, and report preparation aspects of structural engineering projects. They must demonstrate technical proficiency to give technical direction, make technical evaluation, and apply engineering judgement and decisions for the timely and accurate completion of assigned projects. Responsible for the client receiving the analysis, recommendations, designs, and opinions described in the contract between the firm and the client, and that the cost of the project shall be within established budgets. May also perform many of the functions of a Project Manager on certain projects or for specific customers. This position is eligible to work hybrid remote up to 3 days a week following 90 days of in office training either in the Overland Park or Wichita KS offices.

Essential Functions

• Provides retaining wall design for various wall types for Development projects
• Provides bridge structural design for Public Works projects
• May provide project support on structural-related matters to other segments within the company
• Defines customer requirements and the conformity of the system to the contractual specifications
• Technical point of contact for customers and external partners
• Shows continued and progressive professional development inside and outside of BHC
• Seeks and accepts increasing levels of responsibility
• Engages clients and potential clients to identify future opportunities for work
• Maintains client relationships and establishes new ones through business development activities
• May be required to follow up with client on outstanding invoices
• May monitor construction progress and review contractor change orders
• Negotiates with clients for supplemental changes to existing contracts
• Capable of producing a clear, attractive set of plans with minimum supervision
• Prepares proposal estimates of time and expense required to complete quality projects
• Receives and coordinates feedback from the other parts of the process (design, site, and client) from the beginning of the basic design to final product approval
• Responsible for the validation of schematics and documentation on specific aspects of projects
• Independently maintains design and drawing accuracy, quality, completeness, and schedule compliance
• At the design stage, identifies alternatives and optimization opportunities that could impact the design, supplies or site operations, based on the strategy determined
• Coordinates and controls the interfaces internally, for customers and partners
• Begins serving as primary point of contact for client project communication
• Has a strong appreciation for and is committed to compliance with graphic standards
• Able to present project conditions, analysis, and recommendations to client and/or governing jurisdiction staff
• May participate in presentation of proposal to client

Qualifications

Experience

• 5 years of experience as Project Engineer or Project Manager
• Demonstrated success completing engineering projects
• Experience with a public agency, one of our clients or another consulting firm
• Experience in the Development/Public Works/Utilities Industry preferred
• Work cooperatively in a highly interactive project team setting

Skills

• Must be proficient in three-dimensional computer aided design and have a strong ability to utilize technology on those projects
• Must exhibit maturity, professionalism, and a willingness to solve the client’s problems in all meetings
• Specific and recognized technical expertise
• Has shown leadership in process management and/or quality management
• Ability to lead the design on large or complex projects
• Provides training and mentorship for developing engineers and project engineers
• Self-starter who is able to articulate ideas and needs

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering required
• Must be a licensed Professional Engineer
• Structural engineering emphasis preferred
• Master’s degree is a plus
