Student Union Director directs and oversees all operations of the Student Union in accordance with the university or college's policies and procedures. Responsible for directing all functions including coordinating facility use, administering student services and activities, and ensuring proper safety and security measures. Being a Student Union Director supervises, hires, trains, and evaluates professional and student staff. Requires a bachelor's degree. Additionally, Student Union Director typically reports to top management. The Student Union Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments. To be a Student Union Director typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience.     Position Summary:

    Student Life & Leadership is currently recruiting baristas to operate the only student-run coffee shop on campus, Seawolf Grounds, located in the Student Union! Not only do baristas offer high-quality coffee products and customer service to students, staff, faculty, and the general public, but they also learn valuable skills and gain hands-on experience while working on campus. Baristas serve as members of the Student Union staff and can be cross-trained on Information Desk duties. Prior work experience as a barista, in customer service, and in sales and cash handling is preferred but not required of candidates for this position. This student staff position is 10-15 hours/week and starts at $10.85/hour. Preference will be given to students with flexible hours and availability to meet scheduling needs: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 3:30 pm.

    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Ability to perform basic customer service with training.

  • Ability to perform sales and cash handling with training.

  • Ability to prepare coffee and other beverages with training.

  • Ability to carry out assigned tasks and projects with supervision.

  • Ability to exercise patience, focus, and understanding in stressful situations.

  • Possess knowledge of general office equipment, personal computers, copiers, and scanners.

  • Possess good organizational skills.

  • Possess good time management skills.

  • Possess strong attention to detail.

  • Possess strong communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds with accommodation.

  • Ability to successfully complete the UA FERPA and mandatory Title IX trainings.

  • Willingness to learn all job duties, and accept new job duties as needed.

Preferred Experience & Education:
  • Prior work experience as a barista preferred.
  • Prior customer service experience preferred.
  • Prior sales and cash handling experience preferred.

Required Experience & Education:

To be eligible for student employment in Student Life & Leadership, an applicant must: a. Be enrolled in the University of Alaska system with a minimum of six credit hours in the current semester of employment; or b. Have been enrolled the preceding semester for six or more credit hours and demonstrate plans to enroll for six or more credit hours in the next semester for employment between semesters; and c. Have at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA) or approval from the MAU Senior Student Services officer or his/her designee. d. Students enrolled in non-traditional programs of study will be considered eligible for student employment with the approval of the Senior Student Services officer. e. An applicant must provide evidence of enrollment as outlined above to substantiate employment eligibility.

Preference will be given to students who have completed at least one academic semester at UAA.

Preference will be given to students with flexible hours and availability to meet scheduling needs: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 3:30 pm.

Candidates must be available for training prior to the beginning of the fall and spring semesters.



Salary Information:

This is a student position paying $10.85/hour and working 10-15 hours/week.
