Assistant Director for Student Leadership

  • The primary location of this position is the main Cullowhee, NC campus.

    The Assistant Director for Student Leadership reports to the Senior Assistant Director for Leadership Programs. Leadership Programs is responsible for providing leadership development for students at Western Carolina University. This position supports, develops, and implements comprehensive student leadership programs primarily for first-year students at Western Carolina University and collaborates closely with Residential Living and other campus partners. This position serves as the coordinator for the Freshman Leadership Initiative which helps to challenge and provide growth opportunities for our students. Evening and weekend work is required.

    This position supervises, evaluates, and provides guidance to the student intern for Leadership Programs. This position will teach up to two courses per year in the LEAD Minor Program. The primary course will be LEAD 140 and LEAD 180 and support sections of Leadership Minor courses and select instructors. This position will serve as the liaison between the Department of Residential Living and the Leadership Minor as it pertains to leadership programming and the LEAD Living Learning Communities (LLCs).

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required for this position:
    • Knowledge and ability to apply leadership theories, concepts, and practices to programs, curriculum instruction, and other activities.
    • Exemplary organizational skills with a strong emphasis on detail.
    • Experience in planning programs and events.
    • Excellent communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to prioritize workload according to volume, urgency, etc.
    • Strong computer skills using Windows, Microsoft Word, Excel, and internet.
    • Strong leadership and program planning skills.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Master’s Degree required with concentration in College Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration, Leadership or related field and 1 – 2 years job-related experience in a University setting.

    Must be eligible to work in the United States without sponsorship.
