Student Union Director directs and oversees all operations of the Student Union in accordance with the university or college's policies and procedures. Responsible for directing all functions including coordinating facility use, administering student services and activities, and ensuring proper safety and security measures. Being a Student Union Director supervises, hires, trains, and evaluates professional and student staff. Requires a bachelor's degree. Additionally, Student Union Director typically reports to top management. The Student Union Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments. To be a Student Union Director typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience.     ABOUT STUDENT GROUP SERVICES

    Student Group Services (SGS) supports student life at the University of Alberta by providing programming and administrative assistance to student-run clubs and organizations on campus. Services in our portfolio include: Student Group Recognition; Student Group Granting Program; Fall and Winter Clubs Fairs; Group Leader Orientation; student group office and storage spaces. SGS also provides general advising services to student group leaders on topics such as recruitment strategies, interpersonal conflicts, constitutions and governing documents. 


    Overview:

    The Student Group Engagement Lead is a key position focused on fostering a vibrant and inclusive campus community by facilitating meaningful engagement among student groups. This role involves developing strategies to enhance student group participation, promoting collaboration, and creating a sense of belonging within the university. The ideal candidate is energetic, creative, and passionate about building connections among diverse student organizations.


    Responsibilities:

    • Student Group Outreach and Relationship Building:
      • Cultivate and maintain positive relationships with existing student groups.
      • Support and engage new student organizations to diversify campus involvement.
      • Advise student groups on contacts with relevant university departments.
    • Event Planning Support:
      • Collaborate with other UASU departments to develop and maintain a student group event planning toolkit.
      • Assist with planning and execution of fall and winter clubs fair
      • Liaise with the Dean of Students office regarding the submission and approval of student group events. 
      • Assist with the transition of student group event approval from the Dean of Students office to the UASU including reviewing existing processes, developing new policies and procedures, and oversee the event approval process once the transition is completed.
    • Training and Development:
      • Provide training sessions and workshops to student group leaders on effective leadership, event planning, and organizational development.
      • Offer guidance on navigating university policies and procedures related to student groups.
    • Collaboration and Networking:
      • Maintain positive relationships with University and community interest-holders in order to ensure that student groups and their events are encouraged, supported and successful on and off campus. 
      • Facilitate networking opportunities for student groups to connect, share ideas, and collaborate on joint initiatives.
    • Support and Advocacy:
      • Act as an advocate for student groups within the university administration.
      • Offer support and guidance to student groups facing challenges or seeking assistance.
      • Assist with supporting student group granting program
    • Data Collection and Analysis:
      • Develop and implement systems to collect and analyze data related to student group engagement and events.
      • Use data-driven insights to recommend improvements and enhancements to engagement strategies.
    • Other Responsibilities:
      • Provide backup support to other staff in the Student Group Services program.
      • Train, coach and supervise student staff in the Student Group Services program.

    Qualifications:

    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Passion for fostering a diverse and inclusive campus community.
    • Experience in event planning, marketing, or student leadership preferred.
    • Creative problem-solving skills and a positive attitude.
    • Possess a general knowledge of student groups on the University of Alberta campus.
    • Good problem solving and conflict-resolution skills.
    • Ability to work collaboratively with a variety of interest-holders such as Students Union and University staff, students, and the general public.


    Terms of Employment:

    37.5 hours/week


    Hours of operations: 9:00AM - 5:00PM, Monday - Friday


    Some weekend and evening work might be required, especially for Student Executive Training Sessions facilitation, as well as during preparation for Clubs Fair in September and January.


    Location: This work is primarily in person on the University of Alberta campus. Hybrid work may be accommodated; however, not during the first few weeks of each semester.
