    JOB SUMMARY

    The Director of Student Success, Baskin Engineering (BE) leads and manages student success programming within the Jack Baskin School of Engineering to promote undergraduate academic, extracurricular, research and career success. Under the direction of the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Experience, and working in close collaboration with the Associate Dean of Diversity Equity and Inclusion, and senior staff, the Director of Student Success BE oversees Baskin Engineering's Student Success programs. The director identifies and integrates existing initiatives, identifies new opportunities, develops strong collaborations and partnerships with other programs on campus, supervises program staff and oversees administrative budgets and other operational functions. The director plays a central role in supporting or leading grant proposal development to fund new and existing programs, and develops and implements strategies to reduce equity gaps, improve student retention and time to degree completion.

    APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

    Budgeted Salary: $123,900 - $146,700/year. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
    Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

    JOB DUTIES

    50% - Program Administration

    • Lead and provide administrative oversight of the Student Success team including developing and managing program budgets and supervising and mentoring staff and student workers.
    • Work with dean's office senior staff on operational functions such as staff human resources, space planning and financial management.
    • Oversee the administration of existing student success programming including curriculum advising, career engagement, student organization management and support, pathways to undergraduate research, student award management, student travel support, the undergraduate newsletter, outreach to prospective undergraduate students and their families, professional development programs for undergraduate reader/tutors, and general support for the overall student experience and well being.
    • Employ adaptive management approaches to assess and develop and implement strategies to improve program effectiveness.
    • Work in close collaboration with the Director of Undergraduate Advising, the Director of MESA - Engineering, and the Director of Diversity Equity and Inclusion to support the overall undergraduate experience. Explore expanding existing programs, such as the partnership with the Academic Excellence (ACE) program to reach more engineering students.

    30% - Program Development

    • Seek out opportunities and develop proposals for grants to fund programmatic work as well as research into novel approaches for promoting and assessing student success outcomes.
    • Working with senior leadership, look for opportunities to expand existing student success work especially in the areas of undergraduate outreach, pathways to research experiences, internship and career engagement, and overall student wellbeing.
    • Assist in developing research, participate in professional conferences and provide public relations support.
    • Working in collaboration with senior leadership, develop project and programmatic proposals to be included in annual campus or ad hoc campus resource calls.
    • Working in collaboration with the Baskin Engineering Community and Engagement and Development teams, develop content for websites and marketing and communication materials as well as engage with alumni.
    • Working with key divisional staff and campus partners, develop data requests and conduct analyses to assess the effectiveness of student success programs on achieving divisional and campus goals. Analyses will also be used in internal and external reviews of departments and national ranking surveys.

    20% - Collaboration and Partnerships

    • Build strong collaborations and partnerships with other university academic division programs and key central units that focus on student success activities.
    • In coordination with the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Experience look for opportunities to build external relationships with other UC campuses.
    • Facilitate the efforts of various departments, managers and outside constituencies to ensure interdisciplinary collaboration.
    • Oversee relations of the office with the educational and business communities for developmental and promotional purposes.
    • Participate in high-level divisional and university coordinating committees to help set and assess student success initiatives.

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience and / or training.
    • Academic background and experience in managing student success programs.
    • Advanced knowledge of administrative, budgetary, human resources and financial principles and practices.
    • Advanced oral communication skills.
    • Advanced written communication skills.
    • Advanced ability to think creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytical skills.
    • Advanced interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results.
    • Advanced ability to work collaboratively with internal and external peers and managers.
    • Experience supervising diverse teams comprised of self directed staff.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Advanced degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
    • Demonstrated success in grant writing and/or fundraising experience.
    • Ability to successfully manage programs that demonstrate results and achieve goals in a large complex, multi-stakeholder environment.

    SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

    • Ability to work long periods of time at a computer with or without accommodation.
    • The selected candidate will be required to work primarily on campus, with periods of remote work possible based on operational needs. If a hybrid work schedule is confirmed, the selected candidate must be able to work successfully from a home/remote office and be able to fulfill the requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
