Surgeon - Neurology examines, diagnoses, and surgically treats disorders of the brain, spine, spinal cord, and nerves. Operates on the brain in order to relieve pressure in an intracranial hemorrhage, remove a foreign body such as a tumor, treat a wound, or relieve pain. Being a Surgeon - Neurology operates on the spine in order to free entrapped nerves, correct deformity, or restore spinal stability. Reviews patient history and confirms need for surgery. Additionally, Surgeon - Neurology determines which instruments and method of surgery will be most successful in achieving desired outcome. May provide medical personnel with direction concerning patient care. May provide in-service training as needed to address new technology in health care treatment. Provides charting in compliance with all laws and regulations. Requires a MD degree from an accredited school. Typically reports to the chief of surgery. Requires a license to practice. JOB SUMMARY

Physicians provide comprehensive care for the appropriate patient population including diagnosing and treating a wide variety of illnesses that can occur in any of the body systems. Physicians use a variety of diagnostic and therapeutic techniques to treat patients through medication and hospitalization. Responsible for meeting, assessing and diagnosing patients and providing them with healthcare services that embody the St. Luke’s mission, The Patient Above All Else. Prescribes patients with appropriate procedures, medication, health regimens and lifestyle adjustments that will contribute to their recovery from diagnosed health issues, prevent future health issues and promote a healthier life.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school.

Experience: Completion of accredited residency program.

Licensure/Certification/Registration: Current or pending license in Minnesota and/or WI to practice as Physician. Current Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and Department of Public Safety (DPS) registration for prescription writing in Minnesota and/or Wisconsin. Board eligible or Board certified in the appropriate specialty

Knowledge of current principles and techniques of physician practice. Ability to function as a team leader, primary provider and role model; to accept individual responsibility and accountability for decisions and outcome; to communicate effectively with patients, families, personnel and other Physicians and establish professional working relationships with the same. To recognize the legal limits of physician practice; to maintain professional competency through continuing education and independent study. Ability to support St. Luke’s goals and objectives.
