    Position Summary:

    The Surgical Technologist assists in the organization and daily function of the operating room in accordance with established federal, state and accreditation standards and facility policies and procedures, under supervision of the Surgery Center Nurse Manager. The Surgical Technologist assists the nurses and physicians in delivering the highest standard of patient care available, and handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. The surgical Technologist necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and constantly on vigil for maintenance of the sterile field.

    List of Duties and Responsibilities

    • Adheres to and upholds all policies in place at Empire Surgery Center.
    • Ensures that an adequate amount of in-house supplies and medical gases are available in accordance with weekly caseload.
    • Assumes responsibility for competency and takes initiative for professional development and continuing education.
    • Verbalizes knowledge of surgical risks and complications.
    • Demonstrates awareness of protocol for malfunctioning equipment and repair, and reports malfunctioning equipment to appropriate personnel.
    • Uses equipment and supplies in an organized and cost effective manner.
    • Assures all equipment is functioning before use and removes any malfunctioning equipment.
    • Demonstrates skill in appropriate use of instruments and equipment. Gathers, checks, and opens supplies and equipment needed for the surgical procedure. Anticipates the need for additional equipment and supplies, per surgeon preference.
    • Operates mechanical, electrical and air-powered equipment according to manufacturer’s instructions.
    • Assures emergency equipment and supplies are available at all times.
    • Keeps surgical suites clean, tidy, free of soiled equipment and supplies, and properly stocked. Assists with inventory management.
    • Follows established policies and procedures for surgical counts and initiates corrective actions when surgical counts are incorrect.
    • Demonstrates ability to create and maintain a sterile field, and maintains the highest standard of sterile technique during the procedure, uses principles of aseptic practice in varying situations, and initiates corrective action when breaks in technique occur.
    • Participates in the surgical site and patient verification during the time-out procedure.
    • Wears appropriate attire in restricted area and demonstrates proper donning and doffing of PPE per policy.
    • Adheres to recommended traffic patterns.
    • Demonstrates knowledge of sterile processing standards and practices, cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization, records sterilizer test results.
    • Assists with patient transfer, OR turnover, and preparation of sterile supplies (e.g. opening, case pulling).
    • Properly transfers and cares for surgical specimens.
    • Turns on and checks function of the suction pump, 02 and nitrous cylinder, and microscope light before the first surgical patient on every surgical day.
    • Maintains the clean, dirty, and sterile rooms in an organized and efficient manner.
    • Maintains the strictest confidentiality at all times in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
    • Must be willing to support and help other surgery center staff.
    • Attends department and general staff meeting as instructed.
    • Understands, verbalizes and participates in the quality improvement process. Participates in QAPI, infection control, peer review, trainings, and mock-emergency drills as instructed.
    • Arrives for shifts on-time and ready for assigned duties.
    • Works closely with other departments such as surgery scheduling, clinic staff, and managers to prepare for surgery days.
    • Collaborates with the team of patient, family, and healthcare providers in providing patient care in a safe, healing, humane, and caring environment.
    • Listens respectfully, gives feedback directly, honestly and talks with others to clarify differences.
    • Utilizes translation services and/or additional appropriate services to communicate with employees and patients with speech and hearing disorders, or for whom English is not their primary language.
    • Effectively communicates and interacts with patients, their family, and other external and internal clients (including fellow employees) from diverse backgrounds.
    • Demonstrates a willingness to look at new ideas and work in a changing environment.
    • Supports initiatives designed to improve individual and organizational performance.
    • Identifies and reports suspected child, spousal/partner, and elder abuse per protocol.
    • Assists with inventory management.
    • Adheres to all company policies and procedures.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
    Requirements:

    Qualifications

    • High School Diploma or GED
    • Operating Room Experience
    • Certification as a surgical technician or proof of equivalent training
    • Excellent working knowledge of sterile technique and instruments
    • Two (2) years of hospital main operating room or ophthalmic operating experience (preferred)
    • Current BLS Certification (Within 6 months of hire)

    • Ability to handle stress associated with prioritizing multiple tasks.
    • Excellent organization skills with ability to inventory, track, and order supplies as necessary.
    • Excellent knowledge and experience in a hospital operating room or ambulatory surgery center
    • Ability to anticipate the needs of the physician and has equipment, instrumentation, medical gases and supplies readily available for all procedures
    • Ability to scrub all types of cases performed in the surgery center
    • Willingness to assume additional assignments on an as needed basis
