Description

The Surgical Technologist is present in the procedure room and provides help to surgeons and nurses. Responsible for the set up of each case as required by case type. The technologist will hand necessary instruments to the surgeon, so that the surgery can be more easily performed. It is important to be able to anticipate which devices the surgeon will use, so that no time is lost. Certain equipment may also be monitored by the technologist, such as machinery relating to observance of vital signs. After a surgery is complete the technologist is responsible for cleaning the room and disposing of items, so the room is ready for the next patient. The technologist should also make sure that the patient is comfortable during the procedure. The procedure may be explained to the patient prior to it being carried out. Other related duties are included in this position such as changing beds, autoclaving equipment, stocking and ordering supplies as needed.

Position may require travel to other work locations.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

• Inspect, maintain, decontaminate, and repair surgical equipment, keeping inventory records up to date
• Conduct nursing pre- and post-surgery patient care, including shaving, transporting, and applying dressings
• Keep all needed surgical equipment ready, including sterile linens, saline, lights,suction machines, etc.
• Set up room and maintain surgical field, collaborating with nurses and doctorand assisting where required
• Assemble, transport, and retrieve surgical equipment, ensuring all pieces leave the room
• the procedure, receive and place products on a sterile field using sterile technique.
• Maintain equipment as required, such as autoclave maintenance monthly, etc.
• Move equipment as needed (monitor, ultrasound etc.)
• Assist with cleaning and dressing access sites/wounds
• Assist with patient transfer
• Ordering equipment and/or medical supplies, stock rooms, as directed

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

• Graduation from an accredited program
• BCLS certification
• Strong knowledge of medical terminology
• Strong communication and people skills are necessary
• Ability to participate as a member of a team; reliable and punctual
• Ability to travel between VASC locations
