Sustainability Program Coordinator

  • The Associated Students of CSU, Chico is recruiting for Sustainability Program Coordinator . This is a full-time, 11-month (1900 hours), non-exempt position. The pay range is $21.00 - $24.00/hr ; placement in range is dependent upon experience with new hires typically starting at the beginning of the range. The anticipated schedule for this position is 8am to 5pm, Monday through Friday.

    Associated Students offers excellent benefits to include medical, dental and vision insurance with a generous employer contribution toward the cost. Basic life, AD&D, and long term disability are fully employer paid. Retirement is offered through CalPERS. An employee contribution to this defined benefit plan is required in addition to a significant employer contribution.

    The Associated Students (AS) is a comprehensive campus auxiliary corporation of CSU,Chico serving thousands of students, faculty, staff and community members through myriad student programs, services and business enterprises. With an annual budget of more than $21M, the AS operates residential and retail dining services, the Bell Memorial Union, the Wildcat Recreation Center (WREC), and administers the contract for the Wildcat Store (bookstore). Additionally, the AS offers a wide variety of services and programs such as: CAVE (Community Action Volunteers in Education), Child Development Lab, Adventure Outings, Sustainability and student government. Typically, the AS employs more than 100 full and part-time employees and more than 750 students.

    A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with Associated Students. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current Associated Students employees who apply for the position.

    Per CSU and Associated Students policy, all staff accessing campus are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (proof required) or have an approved exemption.

    SUSTAINABILITY PROGRAM COORDINATOR

    SUMMARY

    Under the guidance of the Director of AS Programs, the Sustainability Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the AS Sustainability department, including the student assistants and internship program. This role is charged with advising on and coordinating sustainability standards and policies for the Associated Students (AS) by collaborating with individual AS departments to implement approved project plans. Additionally, the coordinator will help foster a corporate-wide culture of environmental mindfulness allowing the integration of sustainability values and practices into the AS strategic plan and processes.


    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    • Oversee the AS Sustainability program including managing sustainability office and student employees.
    • Responsible for developing comprehensive, unit-bearing internship opportunities.
    • Serves on AS designated campus wide committees in addition to serving as staff to the AS Sustainability Fund Allocation Committee (SFAC) for the allocation of project funds.
    • Facilitates all stages of the SFAC request for funding process as required (i.e. workshops, marketing, meeting preparation, award processing, etc.).
    • Acts as an advisor to the Sustainability Affairs Council.
    • Develops a rubric of best sustainability practices for initial assessment and ongoing evaluation.
    • Coordinates with AS Marketing to promote AS sustainability efforts through website, social media, etc.
    • Develops educational programs for the AS and conducts employee training workshops on environmental responsibility to promote sound corporate stewardship and commitment to sustainability.
    • Selects, hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates student staff.
    • Prepares and manages program budget to ensure the fiscal integrity of the student fee funds.
    • Develops long and short-term strategic plans, recommending policy and organizational changes needed to advance sustainability initiatives within the AS.
    • Collaborates with all areas of the corporation to develop and implement approved sustainability projects coordinating common goals and identifying opportunities between different departments .
    • Conducts annual sustainability audit, compiles data, prepares sustainability indicators reports and disseminates outcomes including achievements, current efforts, and future focus areas for reducing environmental, social, and economic impacts.
    • Develops and maintains sustainability program manuals, policies, and procedures.
    • Serves as the AS internal consultant in areas related to sustainability.
    • Coordinates with Facilities & Maintenance Services regarding the AS Compost Garden and SFAC projects that involve campus.
    • Conducts ongoing and annual program assessment and evaluates compliance with sustainability legislation and University guidelines that support the campus sustainability agenda.
    • Assists with presentations regarding sustainability issues to standing committees and the Board of Directors.
    • Investigates alternative sources of funding, including grant opportunities and special projects.
    • Serves as a resource to staff during design and planning of all new construction and renovation of AS facilities to integrate green design principles and building practices.
    • Tracks relevant information and available resources, staying up to date with the rapidly changing field of sustainability.
    • Represents AS Sustainability to the campus community, the public, and other organizations maintaining positive working relationships.
    • Other duties may be assigned.

    POSITIONS DIRECTLY SUPERVISED

    Up to four (4) student assistants and ten (10) interns

    • Ensure that programs and events meet the needs of the AS and campus community.
    • Organize data, maintain records, and prepare reports.
    • Work well under pressure: meeting multiple and sometimes competing deadlines.
    • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with the campus community, public, co-workers, and those contacted during the course of work, demonstrating cooperative behavior with colleagues and supervisors at all times.

    MINIMUM EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

    • Bachelor’s degree required.
    • One (1) year or part-time equivalent of professional experience coordinating student programs and initiatives (or equivalent).
    • One (1) year in a lead or supervisory position.

    PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS

    • Bachelor’s degree in environmental management and/or sustainability preferred.
    • Experience in an institution of higher education.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

    • Possession of or ability to obtain a current and valid California Driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
    • Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. Associated Students will make a conditional offer of employment which may be rescinded if the background check reveals any disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information.
