Systems Architect is responsible for the architectural design, development, and deployment of an organization's overall IT systems. Designs systems to consider functional requirements, scalability, and security. Being a Systems Architect defines system solutions based on user needs, cost, and required integration with existing applications, systems, or platforms. Researches, identifies, selects, and tests technology products required for solution delivery. Additionally, Systems Architect establishes, implements, and documents technology integrations or migration strategies. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager. The Systems Architect works autonomously. Goals are generally communicated in "solution" or project goal terms. May provide a leadership role for the work group through knowledge in the area of specialization. Works on advanced, complex technical projects or business issues requiring state of the art technical or industry knowledge.     This position primarily involves the principles of systems architecture and the architectural design, development, and deployment of the enterprise’s overall systems. Systems Architects define the architecture of a computerized system (i.e., a system composed of software and hardware) in order to fulfill certain requirements. This position performs professional engineering and scientific work involving the design, development and extension of system and services software-based models using requirements, interface descriptions and other engineering documents in support of capability development and material solutions of training, simulation and instrumentation programs. The position requires the ability to create, update and maintain architecture data as related to the Department of Defense Architecture Framework (DoDAF) and the Joint Capabilities Integration Development System (JCIDS). The primary requirements of the work are (1) professional competence in applying systems architecture principles including definition of system solutions based on user needs, cost, and required integration with existing applications, systems or platforms; (2) specialized knowledge of industry trends and new technologies for the system/enterprise architecture; and (3) expertise of advanced, complex technical concepts and methodologies requiring state of the art technical or industry domain knowledge.


    Journeyman Qualifications

     

    - Ability to conduct system design activities and reviews of detailed application module and interface specifications, classes, objects, methods, and other software components.

    - Ability to ensure that architectural solutions meet technical and functional requirements.

    - Ability to review existing systems architecture and recommend improvements and participate in engineering review to determine ambiguities.

    - Ability to scrutinize change requests to determine the magnitude of work done and estimate the level of work.

    - Knowledge developing strategic system architecture plans.

    - Knowledge in system and network creation and development.

    - Knowledge of information processing fundamentals and best practices.

    - Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

    - Knowledge in prioritizing and executing tasks when under extreme pressure.

    - Knowledge in identifying, analyzing and resolving system problems.

    - Knowledge of the fundamentals, principles, and practices of Model-Based System Engineering.

    - Knowledge of system engineering processes to include requirements analysis and design methodologies, interface design, test, integration, test, quality assurance and deployment.

    - Knowledge of Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA) principles.

    - Specialized knowledge as dictated by specific PWS requirements:

                - Knowledge of software architecture and object modeling, domain engineering and software engineering techniques as it applies to training/testing devices, simulations, simulators and instrumentation.

                - Ability to ensure designs and implementation are consistent with Government architecture standards, quality objectives, and overall engineering best practices.

                - Ability to produce and maintain models using various modeling technologies such as MagicDraw.

                - Ability to produce and maintain models using the following modeling languages: UPDM, UML, SysML and SOAML.

                 - Knowledge of the development of systems and software architectures in accordance to DoDAF standards and processes.

     

    Senior Level Qualifications

    All Journeyman Level expected skills plus the following:

    - Ability to design and implement short and long-term strategic goals for managing and maintaining systems and software.

    - Ability to provide expertise and architectural assistance to software and systems teams and engineers and analysts.

    - Ability to conduct extensive research on new technologies in the field of systems development and create and develop plans for investing in such systems that will increase cost effectiveness and flexibility.

    - Ability to design, create, and monitor the implementation of end-to-end integrated systems.

    - Ability to review new and existing system designs and make recommendations for improving or altering the systems.

    - Ability to work with end-users to further infrastructure development, execute test plans to check technical performance of infrastructure and report findings, and make recommendations for improvement.

    - Ability to develop policies for standardizing systems and security boundaries.

    - Knowledge and extensive experience in the development and implementation of computer systems and networks.

    - Advanced knowledge and understanding of Object-Oriented Programming, coding for large scale web or client-server applications and design and development of application service layers.

    - Strong experience providing guidance and leadership to novice systems and software engineers, developers, and communicating with program managers.

    - Advanced knowledge of Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA) principles.

    - Ability to apply MOSA to systems architecture to develop integrated business and technical strategies that employs modular design tenants, uses widely supported and consensus-based standards for key interfaces, and ensures openness of interfaces in test and evaluation.

    - Specialized knowledge as dictated by specific PWS requirements:

                - Knowledge of the Army Capabilities and Architecture Development and Integration Environment (ArCADIE) and ability to engage as the technical liaison with DoD organizations during the architecture approval process.

                - Ability to serve as a subject matter expert of the training domain and technical liaison with DoD organizations during the architecture approval process from submittal to acceptance.

                - Knowledge of the product line architecture fundamentals, principles, and practices of system and software requirement, design, implementation, test and release in a product line construct.

                - Knowledge and understanding of the training, simulation and instrumentation vision and business needs.

               - Knowledge developing architectural and design patterns and services layers to improve product line performance, product quality and operational efficiency.

               - Ability to evaluate product change proposals for adherence to reference architectures and industry best practices, and identify technical, schedule and cost impacts of a proposed change to the product line.

               - Knowledge of product line engineering methodologies, Model-Based Systems Engineering principles, DevSecOps concepts and lean agile methods and practices.

               - Knowledge of product line architecture frameworks, service-oriented architectures, reference architectures, enterprise architectures, cybersecurity architectures, application architectures and solution architectures, domain engineering and software engineering techniques as it applies to training/testing devices, simulations, simulators and instrumentation.

    Physical Demands:

    • Stand, bend, and stoop for long periods of time while delivering training.
    • Be able to maneuver in and out of strategic and tactical equipment, and capable of lifting and moving electronic equipment more than 40lbs.
