Evaluates, designs and develops existing reports/documents for the performance of the systems. Additionally, Systems Engineering Director requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to top management. The Systems Engineering Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. To be a Systems Engineering Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience.     Role Overview:

    The Senior Systems Engineer is an integral part of the product development team that creates innovative customer solutions for the life sciences industry. This individual reports to the Engineering Manager and is responsible for system integration, selection & adaptation, and validation. By nature of these responsibilities, this individual will be positioned to play a role in technical project management and workflow. This position works under a moderate to low level of supervision. In addition, this position may participate in project specific relationship building with Customers and Suppliers.

     

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Design and integrate moderately complex electromechanical systems and sub-systems.
    • Design and perform system tests throughout the product design cycle, from feasibility to validation.
    • Construct and test prototype systems.
    • Analyze, troubleshoot, debug and document hardware, firmware, and software tools as related to system integration and validation.
    • Participate in hardware and software design reviews.
    • Create design verification and validation test plans. Coordinate/perform all levels of testing per predefined test plans and monitor adherence to test protocol/schedules.  
    • Ensure quality and reliability of system testing.
    • Support multi-disciplinary team with system integration and performance testing.
    • Provide work effort estimates, assist in project planning efforts including project task definition and user requirements specification (URS) creation.
    • Participate in project management activities, timeline creation and implementation.
    • Participate in process and standards improvement efforts.

     

    Critical Competencies for Success

    Education and Experience 

    • BS in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or equivalent required. 
    • Greater than 5 years of experience in related field required. 
    • Preferred experience in Life Science sector; liquid handling and/or sample prep for various analytical or diagnostic workflows.


    Skills and Competencies

    • Highly proficient in electromechanical system design and integration.
    • Experience with stage-gate product design/development, primarily regarding traceability of user requirements, system specifications, and test specifications.
    • Demonstrated project management skills and experience with transfer of products to production.
    • Demonstrated ability to support a manufacturing team after product launch.
    • Experience in a LEAN manufacturing environment.
    • Proficiency in CAD and comfortable reading detailed engineering drawings.
    • Some proficiency with code or test scripting.
    • Proficient working knowledge of stepper motors, encoders, and/or fundamental positioning systems. 
    • Basic understanding of serial protocols (RS-232, RS-485, CAN). 
    • Some familiarity or experience with troubleshooting at various layers; low-level (I2C, SPI, UART), and application-level (PC, C#, .NET).
    • Effective design risk management using Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA). 
    • Effective written and verbal communication skills including presentations to customers, peers, and executives; highly proficient technical writing skills (procedures, reports, etc.). 
    • Ability to operate effectively in the project team environment including mentoring and guiding team members.
    • Able and willing to communicate effectively with customers. 
    • Working knowledge of standards and the ability to apply complex set of standards into designs. Ability to quickly learn, interpret and apply new standards. 
    • Effective time management skills.
