Teacher High School prepares lesson plans and instructs students in an assigned secondary school. Develops and implements grade appropriate course work, activities, and assessments to meet the academic needs of children in a grade 6-12 classroom setting. Being a Teacher High School evaluates and monitors student's performance. Assesses and documents students' progress. Additionally, Teacher High School participates in development and implementation of Individual Education Plans for specific students. Resolves classroom issues and conflicts. May participate in implementing special programs for students. May supervise teaching assistants. Requires a bachelor's degree. May require state-specific teaching license. Typically requires Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Typically reports to a principal. The Teacher High School occasionally directed in several aspects of the work.     POSITION TITLE: Certified Teacher (HS)                                    

    REPORTS TO: HS Principal

    DEPARTMENT: High School

    CLASSIFICATION: Exempt

     

    JOB SUMMARY: High School Teacher candidates who are innovative, enthusiastic and looking for the opportunity to prepare students for a successful future. Hopi Junior/Senior High School is committed to helping all students develop skills in the areas of personal-social growth, educational planning and career and vocational development. (Math, English, Social Studies, Science, and Native American Studies)

     

    RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

    1. Designs and facilitates culturally appropriate instruction for High School students (9th -12th grades) consistent with the Vision, Philosophy, and Student Outcomes established by the Hopi Junior Senior High School Governing Board.
    2. Instructs students and prepares academic lessons to use in class that effectively cover the material through lectures, discussions, visual aids, and other effective teaching methods for student comprehension and accommodating all student learning styles.
    3. Plans a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests and abilities of students. Focus lesson design requiring active student engagement (cooperative learning/small group/independent).
    4. Provides opportunities for students to “showcase” their learning (i.e. theatre production, music shows, oratory presentations, speech contests, creative writing, collaborative learning projects, and project-based learning exhibits).
    5. Administers various types of ‘authentic’ assessments and evaluates students’ academic and social growth, keeps ongoing appropriate records, and prepares quarterly progress reports.
    6. Maintains a safe and supportive learning environment for students upholding high standards of classroom behavior fostering the academic, social, emotional, cultural and creative development of the whole student.
    7. Regularly attends faculty meetings and professional development sessions.
    8. Is available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day.
    9. Adheres to local, state, and national testing procedures and standards.
    10. Functions as an advocate for the students under their immediate supervision in communication with administrative and other staff, parents, and other community members or organizational representatives.
    11. Conducts communication regarding students under their immediate supervision and other students in accordance with Privacy Act, Confidentiality Act, and other regulatory provisions.
    12. Maintains professional conduct consistent with effective and orderly education to protect students, maintain district property, and abide by school policies and rules.
    13. Serves as an active team member with staff, parents, and community members in continually strengthening the High School (9th-12th grade) educational and educational support programs and services of Hopi Senior High School.
    14. Ensures that ample and appropriate materials, supplies, equipment, and other resources are acquired for student learning.
    15. Establishes and maintains positive methods and procedures for communicating consistently with the parents of students under their immediate supervision regarding individual student progress, needs, accomplishments, and other appropriate matters.
    16. Develops Tech-Prep. Student School to Work, and work experiences for 9th-12th grade students designed to provide them with an opportunity to apply learned skills in a workplace setting.
    17. Coordinates expanded student leadership development opportunities, including working with the Tribal Council, Tribal Administration, Tribal Program/Services, or other resources on Hopi/Navajo to identify social and economic development initiatives and planning, and other leadership opportunities.
    18. Ensures personal endeavors are complimentary to the standards of the teaching profession, including the demonstration of positive behavior in the community, as well as in the school environment.
    19. Performs other duties as assigned.

     

    KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

    1. Knowledge of best practice teaching strategies.
    2. Knowledge of best practices in classroom management.
    3. Knowledge of data assessment and disaggregation.
    4. Knowledge of general safety rules and techniques.
    5. Knowledge of district rules of conduct and ethics.
    6. Skills in monitoring and correcting student behavior.
    7. Skills in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with others.
    8. Professional verbal and written communication skills; ability to instruct and maintain emotional control under stress.
    9. Knowledge of Governing Board rules of conduct and policy.
    10. Skill in communicating orally and in writing.
    11. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with others, requiring the ability to interact professionally and courteously with students, faculty, staff and the public.

     

    QUALIFICATIONS:                                                                  

    1. Valid Arizona teaching certificate.
    2. Possess a valid Arizona Secondary Teaching Certificate at the appropriate level or ability to obtain the necessary certification to function in the capacity of High School Teacher.
    3. Bachelor’s degree with required certification (college transcripts required).

     

    PREFERRED QUAILIFICATIONS:

    1. Hopi/Indian Preference in employment considered.
    2. Valid State Driver Licenses.
    3. Valid Arizona Department of Public Safety Fingerprint Clearance Card.
    4. Must successfully pass employment background checks within the last five years which include state, federal and local tribe.
