    Summary

    The Physical Education Teacher is responsible for creating a classroom environment that fosters, promotes and develops an understanding of the relationship of healthy body function and exercise; that motivates each student to cultivate physical fitness, and appropriate social and emotional adjustment; that discovers and develop talents of students in physical achievement; and that develops strength, skill, agility, poise, and coordination in individual, dual and team physical activities and sports, in accordance with each student’s ability. Our educators are expected to engage in on-going professional development, be open to interdisciplinary opportunities, and actively help further our school's strategic initiatives of community and inclusion.

     

    Essential Functions

    • Teach basic skills, knowledge and strategies of both individual and team sports, health and wellness education, healthy eating, exercise for life, games, rhythms, and fundamentals of body movement.
    • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment in the physical education areas.
    • Provides appropriate safety instruction and makes safety checks on equipment and field areas to ensure the overall safety of students.
    • Evaluate each student’s growth in physical skills, knowledge, and contribution in team activities.
    • Maintain control of physical education equipment, related equipment storage and use of school property.
    • Sets high expectations for student learning, motivation, and presentation of their work. Sets clear targets for students’ learning, builds on prior attainment, and ensures students are always aware of all requirements.
    • Provides students with feedback, critiques, encouragement, and support.  Consistently assessing student achievement through formal and informal assessments.
    • Has strong classroom management skills for effectively monitoring student behavior. 
    • Helps support our school mission by being a positive role model and demonstrates professional, ethical, and responsible behavior.
    • Provides an enthusiastic and stimulating learning experience that uses a variety of teaching methods and strategies that help cultivate mastery in physical education and life-long wellness activities for students.
    • Attends and participates in faculty meetings, serves on committees as required, and is attentive to other assignments deemed necessary by the head of school or department head.
    • Responsible for operation of score board at athletic events.
    • Establishes and maintains a professional relationship and open lines of communication, with students, parents, colleagues, and community members.

     

    Required Education and Experience

    • Bachelor’s degree in education or a related field from an accredited university.
    • Prepared to teach age-appropriate classes for 5th- 9th grade.  
    • Flexibility, organization, decision making and problem-solving skills. 
    • Has strong communication (verbal and written), public relations, and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to meet deadlines, work on multiple projects, and coordinate the work of students.
    • Instructs students, while managing their behavior, during classes and class related activities.
    • Knowledge of effective classroom management strategies is a must.

    Employee experiences constant interruptions and inflexible deadlines. The noise level in this environment is quiet to loud. The job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment, but there may be possible exposure to childhood diseases and illnesses. The work environment may vary from extremely cold to extremely hot depending on the activity and the season. Exposure to heated/air conditioned and ventilated facilities with average interior dust with occasional exposure to outdoor elements.

    In-person attendance necessary to provide an effective level of performance during regular school hours. There are some required commitments outside of regular school hours as needed, including evening and weekend commitments, as well as accompanying students on various experiential activities throughout the year.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, and talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Physical requirements are consistent with light physical duties required of teachers generally. In-person attendance necessary to provide an effective level of performance during regular school hours.
