Technical Librarian develops and maintains a collection of technical information and provides research and reference support to researchers, scientists, and engineers. Builds an extensive network of technical information resources and contacts from various sources like government agencies, universities, professional and industry associations to obtain the required information. Being a Technical Librarian communicates with researchers to develop and maintain a broad knowledge and understanding of the organization's relevant topics and effectively target technical publications as information sources. Creates abstracts, bibliographies, and metadata to classify the information. Additionally, Technical Librarian obtains translations of literature as needed. Supports and maintains the library's technology infrastructure and information retrieval tools. Typically requires a master's degree in library science. Typically reports to a manager. The Technical Librarian work is closely managed. Works on projects/matters of limited complexity in a support role. To be a Technical Librarian typically requires 0-2 years of related experience.     Statement of the Job:

    The GIS Librarian provides GIS-related leadership, vision, and planning to support the instructional, research, scholarship, creative activity, and public service missions of the University of Maine. The position will collaborate closely with faculty, research staff, and library colleagues to improve the discoverability of geospatial data through experimentation and innovative solutions. The successful candidate will be willing to learn and understand the process of data generation for any scientific or geospatial domain, including understanding instrumentation, keeping up-to-date on metadata standards and ontologies, assessing key discoverability parameters, and activating and implementing versioning capabilities. Typical hiring range for this position is $51,183 to $67,331 commensurate with qualifications and experience.

    Qualifications:

    Required:

    • American Library Association accredited Master's degree in library and information science
    • Significant/advanced geospatial/GIS experience and training and experience working with scholars engaged in GIS-based research
    • Demonstrated successful personnel management experience
    • Ability to establish priorities, maintain good working relationships with colleagues, work independently, and collaborate and work effectively in a team-oriented environment and as a member of a diverse community.

    Preferred:

    • Experience with special collections and government publications
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills
    • Ability to work in a team-oriented environment
