Technical Librarian develops and maintains a collection of technical information and provides research and reference support to researchers, scientists, and engineers. Builds an extensive network of technical information resources and contacts from various sources like government agencies, universities, professional and industry associations to obtain the required information. Being a Technical Librarian communicates with researchers to develop and maintain a broad knowledge and understanding of the organization's relevant topics and effectively target technical publications as information sources. Creates abstracts, bibliographies, and metadata to classify the information. Additionally, Technical Librarian obtains translations of literature as needed. Supports and maintains the library's technology infrastructure and information retrieval tools. Typically requires a master's degree in library science. Typically reports to a manager. The Technical Librarian work is closely managed. Works on projects/matters of limited complexity in a support role. To be a Technical Librarian typically requires 0-2 years of related experience.     As a member of the Collection Services team, the eResources Librarian supports the development, selection, maintenance, and promotion of CLP and countywide electronic resources. This position serves as a resource to ensure awareness of and reliable access to CLP and countywide electronic resources. Reporting to the Coordinator, eResources, this Librarian engages and cooperates with staff across the CLP system to achieve system-wide goals, and collaborates with staff within CLP and across the county to achieve shared goals and ensure a quality patron experience.

    The Librarian motivates and builds skill and competency in staff at all levels, oversees and refines service design in their area of expertise, and anticipates and develops responses to community needs while keeping a system-wide perspective. The Librarian develops and maintains their own direction and status as a professional by keeping up with developments in the field, engaging in personal and professional development, being involved in organizations and advocacy at a local, state or national level, communicating about their work and collaborating with other professionals.

    Work Hours: 37.5 hours per week; days, evenings and weekends required.

    Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
    • Develops, maintains, and promotes CLP and countywide electronic resources, including databases, downloadable and streaming resources, under the direction of the Coordinator, eResources;
    • Identifies the recreational and information needs of the community and ensures a range of appropriate, inclusive, and accessible electronic resources to engage them;
    • Serves as a point of contact for staff and patron questions related to eResources, via email, phone, internal ticketing systems, or other communication methods;
    • Works with CLP IT and eiNetwork to resolve access issues;
    • Contributes to the development and delivery of eResource-related learning & training opportunities for staff and patrons;
    • Contributes to the evaluation of existing and potential electronic resources;
    • Assists with the upkeep and maintenance of electronic resource collections and tools;
    • Contributes to the library’s efforts to engage readers and learners of all ages through collection and resource promotion and other means;
    • Participates in appropriate committees, teams, and groups of staff at the department, system, and county level to accomplish their work;
    • Analyzes and interprets data and trends in library eResources, both locally and nationally;
    • Supports eResource-related Shared Services, including existing and potential services to support libraries in our consortium;
    • Understands, advocates for and engages with their community (i.e., library service area or area of expertise) to ensure the needs identified are addressed; and building their communities through meaningful interactions between the library and its community and among community members via the library;
    • Models librarianship for their peers and developing skills and abilities of less experienced staff through coaching, engaging in and supporting lifelong learning, direct and indirect work assignments, building and extending trust and empowering staff to work to the top of their classifications to achieve the library’s goals;
    • Demonstrates leadership and engaged participation in system-wide activities, such as committees and teams - modeling behaviors in patron-focused service, self-directed learning and professional development, strategic thinking and planning, and personal accountability;
    • Evaluates the success of their efforts and continuously improves offerings to respond to changing needs through data collection and analysis; and contributes to the vision of a future-focused library;
    • Collaborates with colleagues and develops relationships throughout CLP and the Allegheny County Library System (ACLA);
    • Contributes to ongoing development of the library system through participation in system-wide initiatives, committee work, research, and professional development;
    • Establishes and maintains communications with individuals and groups to monitor and meet community needs and relays essential information to system-wide coordinators and colleagues;
    • Participates in related Development, Fundraising and other advocacy efforts and activities;
    • Models desired behaviors consistent with the Philosophy and Standards of Service Excellence;
    • Uses standard and specialized reference resources and materials;
    • Engages in and models active personal and professional development of skills and competencies;
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Requirements & Qualifications:
    • Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited university;
    • Demonstrated experience resolving eResource access issues;
    • Previous experience managing library eResources preferred;
    • Experience developing and implementing effective training resources.
    • In depth knowledge of electronic resources, including databases, downloadable and streaming platforms, and authentication methods;
    • Demonstrated ability to gather, analyze, interpret and present data and use data in decision-making;
    • Demonstrated strong leadership skills, including the ability to identify and resolve problems;
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team to manage assignments and responsibilities effectively;
    • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to create presentations and conduct training sessions;
    • High level of computer literacy, including M365, and strong information technology skills;
    • Familiarity with and demonstrated experience in assessing current and emerging trends in publishing and technology and their applications in libraries;
    • Ability to exercise initiative and creativity in response to a changing environment;
    • Strong customer service focus in alignment with CLP’s Philosophy and Standards of Service Excellence;
    • Work as part of a team, meet deadlines, manage assignments and responsibilities effectively;
    • Utilize familiarity with collection development and ability to recognize current reading, viewing and listening interests;
    • Effectively use a computer for extended periods, often for a full work day;
    • Develop advanced knowledge of CLP policies and practices, trends in library science and services;
    • Interpret and implement policy to staff, customers and community;
    • Contribute to developing and achieving goals and objectives related to CLP’s Strategic Plan;
    • Make decisions for the betterment of CLP and location/department using independent judgment and understanding of CLP’s strategic directions;
