    The University of Maine at Farmington (UMF) and the Emery Community Arts Center (ECAC) are in search of a full-time, year-round Techinical Director (A/V) beginning August 15, 2024. The Technical Director Audio Visual (A/V) at Emery Community Arts Center (ECAC) plays a key role in supporting the technical and organizational aspects of ECAC's year-round arts programming. This multifaceted position involves providing comprehensive audiovisual technical support, sound reinforcement, lighting, rigging, event coordination, and stage management for a variety of live events, including performances, concerts, lectures, and other artistic presentations. Additionally, the Technical Director (A/V) will be responsible for facilitating visual art exhibitions by overseeing gallery preparation, art handling, and installation in ECAC's Flex Space Gallery and adjacent lobby areas.


    The Emery Community Arts Center is a vibrant and versatile arts venue. Our dynamic programming brings local, regional, and national artists, musicians, performers, and scholars to Farmington. Our facility includes:


    • Flex Space Gallery: The Flex Space is a 1,600-square-foot gallery for traditional exhibits, new media and performance art.
    • Performance Space: The Performance Space is a 2,500-square-foot, 120-seat multipurpose black box theater with dynamic vertical foldaway doors that open onto an outdoor performance area.

    Work Schedule: Due to the event-based nature of the position, the weekly schedule will be irregular, oriented around programming needs and schedule of events, often during evenings and weekends.


    Working Conditions: Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, bending, lifting, climbing ladders, and using stairs and lifts. Lifting and exerting force of more than 50 pounds requires assistance by other employee(s) or mechanical assistance. Individual forces must never exceed 50 pounds.


    Essential Duties

    • Coordinates and manages logistical aspects of events and productions, including venue setup, staffing requirements, implementing technical support, and breaking down events to ensure seamless execution from start to finish.
    • Implements and provides technical assistance in the setup, operation, and troubleshooting of audiovisual, sound, and recording equipment for various events and activities.
    • Ensures the proper functioning and maintenance of all audiovisual equipment, including sound systems, projectors, screens, lighting fixtures, and related accessories to support ECAC events.
    • Hires, trains, manages, and supervises student employee technical crews, art gallery monitors, and student event staff.
    • Creates sound and video design for theatrical productions and performances.
    • Collaborates with artists, performers, presenters, and production teams to plan and execute successful events and to create a welcoming environment.
    • Supervises, facilitates and assists in art installations to support the rotating program of art exhibitions in the Flex Space Gallery and designated adjacent spaces, which includes gallery preparation, art handling, collaborating with and/or assisting artists and curators to install and light artwork, and working with collaborators to ensure that ECAC’s art installation policies are followed.
    • Cleans and maintains specialized audio, lighting, and A/V equipment.
    • Provides advice on audiovisual equipment acquisition, budget, and event program.

    • Rigging – Demonstrated knowledge of various rigging techniques, such as selecting appropriate hardware (such as slings, shackles, and cables), calculating load capacities, and securing loads properly.
    • Safety and Compliance - Ensuring the safety of personnel and equipment is paramount. Ability to adhere to safety protocols and regulations, especially when working with rigging, electrical systems, or complex A/V setups.

    Required Qualifications


    • Bachelor’s degree in Technical Theater or related field.

    • One (1) to three (3) years of professional experience.

    • Or a combination of education and experience.

    • Experience in audio engineering, sound reinforcement, and/or live sound mixing.

    • Experience with professional/theatrical video projection systems including projectors and screens.

    Preferred Qualifications


    • Three (3) to five (5) years of professional experience or a combination of education and experience.

    • Experience in audiovisual implementation and support, with a strong knowledge of A/V equipment.

    • Experience with ETC lighting boards, digital audio mixers, QLab, and/or Creston digital media transmission systems.

    • Experience with creating sound and/or video design for theater.

    • Experience in event work.

    • Experience handling and installing artwork in a gallery setting.

    • Staff scheduling.

    • Comfortable with both Mac and PC operating systems.

    • Experience working with power tools.

    • Experience in the implementation of theatrical lighting, lighting programming, and experience with theatrical lighting electrics.

    • Experience performing live and cued sound amplification.
