Director, Student Pathways

  • The Director of Student Pathways collaborates with the program areas under Workforce and Continuing Education (WCE) and some Curriculum program areas, creating and promoting transition activities and educational pathways for the Adult Education and Occupational Extension students. Primary administrative responsibilities include supervising Transitional/Pathways full-time and adjunct instructors, also working with WCE program areas such as Adult Education to support managed enrollment focused orientations for ABE/ASE and ESOL, and Occupational Training students. The Director will provide interventions for students at-risk of dropping out of the Pathways/Transitions programs and advising for students to transition to post-secondary education. The Director will oversee the collaboration and partnership between Curriculum and Adult Education to deliver transition English and Math classes and identify and develop Integrated Educational and Training pathways for Adult Education students, including ESOL students, with a goal to secure federal Integrated English Literacy and Civics Education (IELCE) funding in the future.
    Mid Salary Duties/Functions
    Administrative Responsibilities for Effective Instruction in Student Pathway courses:
    • In consultation with the Associate Dean of Adult Education and Dean, coordinate recruiting, screening, hiring, orientation, mentoring, and retention of full-time and part-time instructors according to college human resource policies and procedures.
    • Oversee the partnership between Adult Education and Curriculum Instruction in the development of Transition Math and English courses to better serve curriculum students who qualify for Title II Adult Education.
    • Identify and develop Integrated Educational and Training pathways for Adult Education students, including ESOL, with a goal to secure federal Integrated English Literacy and Civics Education (IELCE) funding in the future.
    • Lead/facilitate the Pathways/Transitional program student recruiting, retention, and transition strategies.
    • Collaborate with other College staff and faculty to promote successful pathways for all Adult Education and Occupational Training students, including High School Equivalency, and ESOL students.
    • Ensure managed enrollment is implemented by all instructors, as appropriate.
    • Ensure that attendance policies are being implemented by all instructors.
    • Participate in the development of teaching assignments for part-time and full- time instructors, for final approval by the Associate Dean and Dean.
    • In consultation with the Associate Dean and Dean, initiate class schedule adjustments necessitated by enrollment patterns and changing circumstances.
    Administrative Responsibilities to ensure student success and program performance
    • Regularly monitor and review with instructors the performance of all Pathways/Transition classes’ Measurable Skills Gains to ensure all classes meet targets.
    • Ensure faculty and staff follow state and National Reporting System (NRS) guidelines, including the state assessment policy.
    • Stay abreast of policies and practices related to the various assessments used in Adult Education, WCE, and Curriculum student success measures via trainings, periodicals, webinars, etc. to ensure compliance with state and federal guidelines and the WCE Strategic Plan.
    Student Support
    • Provide both internal and external referrals to resources to assist students in alleviating any barriers to their successful participation in the program.
    • Work with the WCE program Directors/Coordinators and instructors to identify students at-risk of dropping out of Pathways/Transition classes.
    • Meet with students at-risk of dropping out to provide strategies as needed to assist them in continuing their education.
    • Assist students in transitioning to post-secondary education, including Occupational Extension programs.
    Prepare and provide orientation programs for new students:
    • Deliver a minimum of two orientations at each enrollment period and convey information regarding policies, procedures, and expectations to students including pathway and transition opportunities.
    • Plan, in coordination with the area Deans, Directors, Coordinators and meet with VP of WCE to develop and monitor new WCE through Curriculum to career pathways for students in ABE/ASE and ESOL on all campuses.
    Administration
    • Work with the Associate Dean and Dean to order instructional materials for the department.
    • Attend and participate in WCE Directors‘ and WCE All Team meetings.
    • Provide oversight of facilities, equipment, and student records to include:
    • maintaining classroom and laboratory spaces including upkeep of assigned equipment.
    • providing for the security of facilities, equipment, and instructional materials and maintaining safe working conditions.
    • Maintain student attendance records in Advansys in accordance with established deadlines using a variety of technology-based programs for all classes taught.
    • Comply with all applicable college, state, and federal rules and regulations.
    Prepare and teach departmental courses to include:
    • developing learner centered lesson plans and curriculum aligned with NC Adult Basic Education and Adult Secondary Education Content standards
    • employing teaching strategies and instructional materials for different learning styles
    • supporting and incorporating, as pedagogically appropriate, current technology in classroom, distance learning, and computer labs
    • creating and modeling a quality learning environment that supports a diverse student population
    • developing new courses as needed to support the instructional mission
    • participating in the development and review of course and program/general education outcomes as appropriate
    • supporting, remain informed, and ensuring students in pathway courses grow academically by assisting in them meeting program goals.
    Professional development
    • Identify/promote professional development for instructors/staff to support excellent teaching and service and attainment of Title II certifications.
    • Participate in professional development opportunities to advance leadership skills.
    • Participate in professional development activities to maintain currency in field; maintaining current credentials or licensures as required by Adult Education.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
    • Demonstrate and model the College’s employability skills: adaptability, communication, information processing, problem solving, responsibility and teamwork.
    Difficult Challenges
    • Ensuring effective and student-centered Transition/Pathway instruction across all campuses.
    • Ensuring cohesive, engaging orientation program for all students that is consistent with all policies and procedures of Adult Education.
    • Dealing with limited resources (fiscal, human, supplies, etc.) Dealing with frequent interruptions. Managing personnel issues. Managing student issues (behavior, health, emergencies, etc.)
    Contacts

    Weekly/Monthly: Curriculum and Continuing Education partners of Transition and Pathway classes, Maintenance, Information Technology, Public Safety and other departments as needed.
    Consults with other transition coordinators in North Carolina.
    Education Required
    • Bachelor’s degree in English, Mathematics, ESOL, Education, or related area from a regionally accredited post-secondary institution.
    • Certification through the NCCCS (i.e. STAR, CORE, ASE Reading, ASE Math, ESOL Fast Track) Must acquire within the first year of employment.
    Education Preferred
    • Master’s degree in Adult Education, ESOL, Education or a related field from a regionally accredited post-secondary institution.
    Experience Required
    • Two years of progressive academic administrative experience within a postsecondary institution to include staff and faculty supervision, performance evaluation and classroom observation.
    • Two years teaching experience in Curriculum, Occupational Extension, Adult Education (Basic Skills), or ESOL.
    • Experience with enrollment management, curriculum/program development/design and outcomes assessment.
    • Experience advising students, including those transitioning to post-secondary education and /or employment.
    Experience Preferred
    • More than two years of progressive academic administrative experience within a postsecondary institution to include staff and faculty supervision, performance evaluation and classroom observation.
    • Greater than two years of teaching experience in Curriculum, Occupational Extension, Adult Education (Basic Skills), or ESOL.
    • Community College administrative and/or teaching experience, especially in the credit and/or occupational extension level
    • Experience with distance learning and/or alternate instructional delivery systems.

    • Ability to implement supervision of effective instruction in a multi-campus adult education program.

    Must be willing to travel between many locations where classes are offered.
    Work a minimum of one evening per week; occasional weekend duty required.
