    JOB SUMMARY

    The Department of Performance, Play & Design (PPD) is a multi-disciplinary, academic unit of the University of California Santa Cruz. It houses three degree-granting programs in Theater Arts, Dance, and Games & Playable Media. As part of the curriculum, the Department supports productions of plays, dance concerts, and other performances and installations. Our department is committed to an anti-racist and decolonial educational ethos that fosters an artistic environment that is accessible to and in solidarity with communities fighting for justice.

    Under the general supervision of the PPD Operations and Facilities Manager, the incumbent will supervise paid student employees and students enrolled in labs for academic credit. The Technology Manager will supervise all departmental equipment inventories and oversee all repair, maintenance, installation and removal of sound, lighting, AV, and IT equipment for all PPD facilities including those required for sponsored productions as well as academic spaces. This position also oversees the PPD Computer Labs and supports permanently installed and temporary computer and mixed media systems in PPD performance spaces and other facilities.

    APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

    Budgeted Salary: $73,300 - $84,900/annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
    Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

    JOB DUTIES

    25% - Student Supervision
    • Supervise student employees and production students.
    • Hire, train and supervise student and limited term sound, lighting, media employees in production and lab assistant positions.
    • Instruct faculty, staff, student employees and production students on proper installation and operation of lighting, sound and video equipment.
    • Conduct trainings on safe usage of equipment and maintain records of said training.\
    • Assist PPD Operations & Facilities Manager with Injury and Illness Prevention Program training and documentation.

    25% - Equipment Coordination & Inventory
    • Supervise inventory, distribution, installation, repair, and maintenance of sound, lighting, multimedia and telecommunication equipment for all PPD facilities. Facilities include, 483 seat Mainstage Theater, 220 seat Second Stage Theater, 180 seat Experimental Theater, 150 seat Barn Theater, 48 Seat B100 Studio Theater, and over ten other academic spaces.
    • Oversee all aspects of equipment installation and repair including, power hook-up and distribution, light hangs, focusing and cueing sessions. Maintain records of all equipment repairs and service. Train students, staff (and faculty) on the operation and installation of equipment. Coordinate and instruct in the repair of sound, lighting, telecommunication, and multimedia equipment.
    • Supervise and execute annual and quarterly inventory of PPD equipment in the Theater Arts Center, Barn Theater and DARC Building. Inventory includes tracking and confirming University ID labels as established by University inventory policies.

    20% - Lead Theater Technician
    • Supervise maintenance and repair of all PPD electrical equipment. Ensure conformation to electrical codes and safe work practices, including general safety, lockup and security of equipment. Ensure proper installation, operation, and repair of all PPD lighting, sound, media and telecommunications equipment. Including closed circuit TV systems, clear com, digital video projection as well as typical lighting and sound control systems and equipment for production.
    • Assist in enforcement of facility rules and safety regulations for all PPD spaces in the Theater Arts Center and DARC Building.
    • Assist with oversight, administration, and propose policy regarding facility security.

    10% - PPD Computer Labs Admin
    • Maintain procedures to ensure the reliable day-to-day operation of the labs.
    • Maintain procedures to ensure the physical security of the labs facilities and equipment.
    • Maintain procedures to ensure ready access to lab software by PPD students and faculty, while complying with all appropriate license agreements.
    • Manage online software library, using software checkout applications as appropriate. Control access and track usage. Ensure the security of lab software, including the prevention of illegal copying.

    15% - IT Support for Instruction and Performance Technology
    • Provide IT support for specialized theater and production software, computers and equipment.
    • Specify, install, configure and secure permanent software and equipment, and install and remove temporary software and equipment, for performances, as appropriate.
    • Receive, set up and install new end-user equipment and ensure its correct functioning. Move existing equipment to new users and ensure its correct functioning. Install, or assist users in installing, upgrades of software, memory, processors, drives, cards and other components as needed. Install or upgrade, or assist users in installing or upgrading, systems and application software. Troubleshoot, repair and/or arrange for the repair of malfunctioning equipment.
    • Provide phone, email, on-site and in-office consulting for PPD computer users. Troubleshoot and resolve hardware, software and network problems.

    5% - Professional Development
    Actively pursue opportunities to upgrade relevant professional skills through reading and by attending professionally relevant trainings, workshops and expositions. Undergo professional development, especially in the area of DEI, as appropriate.

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
    • Must possess CPR/First Aid/AED certification or have the ability to obtain it within 60-calendar days of hire.
    • Mastery knowledge of, and practical experience with, theatrical lighting, sound, and digital media equipment including diagnosis and repair.
    • Thorough knowledge of lighting control boards, including maintenance, programming troubleshooting and diagnosis.
    • Thorough knowledge of digital and analog audio. Including all forms of playback, editing, live recording and reinforcement.
    • Thorough knowledge of theatrical audio and video software such as QLab, Reaper, and Watchout.
    • Thorough knowledge of classroom AV control systems such as Extron or Crestron
    • Able to supervise professional and student work crews effectively.
    • Excellent organizational and record keeping skills sufficient to maintain inventory, and purchasing records with accuracy and detail.
    • Able to work independently as well as in a team environment.
    • Practical knowledge of GSuite Applications (Gmail, Drive, Calendar, etc.) and Zoom.
    • Experience working with communities and individuals of diverse backgrounds and orientations, such diversity including social, economic, and ethnic backgrounds, the LGBTQ community, and varying levels of physical ability.
    • Demonstrated commitment to embracing diversity in all its forms and striving for an inclusive community that fosters an open, enlightened, and productive environment.
    • Good working knowledge of shop safety practices and theatrical safety practices including OSHA and Cal-OSHA rules and regulations.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
    • Good knowledge / skills In financial and personnel administration and experience in budgetary management.
    • Knowledge of, and interest in, methods for supporting emerging forms of theater and artistic production including 3D printing, fabric printing, projection mapping and installation of digital media.
    • Expertise in non-Western production forms, and in community as well as professional theater.
    • Experience working with faculty in teaching, advising, consulting, and grading the work of students.
    • Experience working with undergraduate college students.

    SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
    • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.

    • The selected candidate will be required to work primarily on campus, with periods of remote work possible based on operational needs, and be able to fulfill requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
