About the Position
The Tires and Material Testing Technician position is an Entry level opportunity in Vehicle Dynamics Area (VDA) tire rotation.
The Tires and Materials Testing Technician will perform vehicle assembly rotations to support the daily testing activities conducted by our Driver Engineers. Work may involve manual tasks that require test setup, tire mounting, tire balancing, tire dismounting, calibration checks, use of tools. The equipment or machines operated by the Technician may be manual, semi-automatic, or automatic.
Must be able to communicate effectively with technicians and engineers (both internal and OE customers) and support a positive work environment and collaborative teamwork approach to solve technical challenges. In specific events this position may require shift work including evenings, nights and weekends.
Initial responsibilities include onboarding, training (complete necessary OBTs), learning, observing others, as well as working alongside the Lead or Master Tire Technician.
Primary Responsibilities
Rotate/Swap test assemblies on and off the test vehicle when the Engineer Driver pulls into the rotation bay and onto the vehicle lift (to perform this task lifting of assemblies, use of impact wrench and torque wrench, operation of vehicle lifts and strong communication with others performing the task are required)
Preparation of tests by obtaining mounted assemblies from the Tire Room, organizing the assemblies in sets to be tested. Verify the sets and testing order match the test request. Verify calibration of air gage and torque wrench and other tools. Set and confirm tire inflation pressures per test request and Engineer Driver instruction. Mount and balance tires as needed. Return assemblies and vehicle to appropriate location after testing.
Be able to recognize errors and suggest improvements.
Prepare test surface and course layout by correctly placing cones in the designated location and turning on the water for any wet handling tests that are scheduled.
Front line of contact with OE customers, requiring professionalism and good communication.
Take initiative to train, learn and support other technicians becoming a reliable team member.
Learn, observe and follow the lead of the Lead/Master Tire Technician.
Travel to support off-site testing. Rock Crawling, Sand, Snow, Racetracks, etc.
Learn and understand the ISO audit process.
Comply with all Health, Safety, Environmental and other Company policies and procedures. Follow all safety rules and practices.
Required Education and Experience
Minimum 1 year of relevant experience required with a High School Diploma or an Associates degree in STEM field accepted in lieu of experience.
Any VDA tire rotation and/or prior experience with tires preferred.
Prior experience in a laboratory, manufacturing or industrial facility desired.
Driver’s License required, CDL a plus.
