THE POSITIONThe City of Santa Barbara Community Development Department is seeking a knowledgeable Plans Examiner. This position is responsible for consulting with contractors, engineers, architects, and the general public concerning the acceptability of drawings submitted for approval to build within the City; reviewing building and structural plans and specifications for conformance to building codes, laws, ordinances and regulations; and performing a variety of related duties as assigned. Assignments may include, but are not limited to, working at the front counter, performing "Over-the-Counter" plan checks, reviewing plans as part of the Pre-application Review Team (PRT) and Development Application Review Team (DART) processes.

- Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, communicating with others, reading, and writing, operating assigned equipment and vehicles.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAININGAny combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:Two (2) years of building jurisdictional experience; reviewing construction plans is desirable. This experience could include inspection of electrical, carpentry, heating, ventilation, refrigeration, or other trades; and/or experience in reviewing electrical, structural, or mechanical plans.
Education and/or Training:Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. Specialized training in structural, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, architecture, civil engineering or a related field is desirable.
License, Certificate and/or Other Requirements:Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid driver's license.
Possession of, of ability to obtain within 18 months of appointment, an I.C.C. Plans Examiner Certification or an equivalent certificate or license.
