Maintains tool functionality, calibration specifications, and safe condition by performing frequent inspections of tools and equipment for wear, defects, or damage. Being a Tool Crib Attendant keeps an inventory of tools by tracking the distribution of tools and users in a database or other system. Orders new tools and equipment or repairs tools as needed. Additionally, Tool Crib Attendant has training and experience in an industrial environment with familiarity of heavy machinery and tools. May require a high school diploma or its equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Tool Crib Attendant possesses a moderate understanding of general aspects of the job.     Overview

    The Test Facilities Operation, Maintenance and Engineering (TFOME) team at the NASA Glenn Research Center provides engineering and technical services in the aeronautics, space power and propulsion test facilities.  We are currently seeking a Machine Tool Repair candidate to apply technical knowledge to troubleshoot and repair machine tools and equipment with an emphasis on electrical, electronic, electro-mechanical and hydraulic controls. Performs routine preventative maintenance to machine tools and equipment as part of an overall maintenance program.

    Responsibilities

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    1. Diagnosing & troubleshooting equipment, aligning spindles, precision leveling, maintaining, repairing and rebuilding of machine tools and fabrication equipment such as milling machines, lathes, center- less grinders, etc.

     

    1. Knowledge of CNC based equipment and the ability to troubleshoot and repair electronic systems down to the component level.

     Troubleshoot manufacturing equipment which uses electronic and computer systems to control hydraulic, pneumatic, and electromechanical subsystems and components.

     

    1. Diagnose problems based on observations of malfunction, deviations from manufacturer’s specifications, and problem reports from shop staff.

     

    1. Dismantle machinery as needed to access, inspect, repair, or replace defective components.

     

    1. Determine most effective repair or rebuild scenario.

     

    1. Test machines following repair and prior to return-to-service to ensure operation within manufacturer’s specifications and Government requirements

     

    1. Replacing broken or defective parts with items obtained from stock or vendors.

    Here’s what you’ll need:

    KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS 

    1. Journeyman level certificate as a Machine Tool Repairman, or equivalent training and work experience in a similar field of expertise.

     

    1. Minimum of 4 years of related work experience.

     

    1. Must possess the understanding of the basic geometries of common machine shop tools; i.e., lathes, mills, grinders, brakes, etc.

     

    1. Must possess the understanding and functionality of electronic control circuits, industrial electrical circuits (NEC), mechanical and hydraulic control systems, and the ability to troubleshoot and repair malfunctions in a timely manner.

     

    1. Possess a thorough working knowledge of machine tool geometries.

     

    1. Able to perform routine preventative maintenance to machine tools and equipment as part of an overall maintenance program.

     

    1. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions from supervision.

     

    1. Ability to use proper judgment and decisions to allow continuity of work flow.

     

    1. Must be self-motivated and a "Team Player" with good interpersonal and communication skills.

     

    1. Must be able to organize time and assignments to properly prioritize efforts for maximum effectiveness.
