Tool Design Engineer designs and develops tools and machinery used to facilitate and optimize manufacturing processes. Reviews product design and build requirements to determine tooling concepts, design options, testing plans, and specifications. Being a Tool Design Engineer develops designs for fixtures, jigs, gauges, cutting and forming tools, carts, racks, and other items to support production. Utilizes Computer-Aided Design (CAD) to create accurate, complete, and concise design models and documentation to fabricate tools. Additionally, Tool Design Engineer estimates costs, resource requirements, and materials required for tools. May manage the sourcing, quoting, or procurement of purchased tools. Typically requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Tool Design Engineer work is closely managed.     Summary - Designs a variety of tooling, jigs, fixtures & special gauges that are needed in manufacturing processes using CAD/CAM, Solidworks, and other Microsoft software performing the following duties.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities to which competency will be measured include the following:

    • Studies specifications, engineering blueprints, tool orders, and shop data and confers with engineering and shop personnel to resolve design problems related to material characteristics, dimensional tolerances, service requirements, and manufacturing procedures.
    • Applies algebraic and geometric formulas and standard tool engineering data to develop tool configuration.
    • Selects standard items such as bushings and tool bits to incorporate into tool design.
    • Draws preliminary sketches and prepares layout and detail drawings.

    Other duties may be assigned.
