Purpose/ Summary:

The Tool Maker II position is responsible for moderately complex building and modifying tools, jigs, molds and fixtures using precision bench and machining operations. 

Core Duties and Responsibilities:

Under General Supervision: 

• Works with machinist hand tools and precision measuring instruments using a good mechanical aptitude
• Programs, sets-up, and operates machine tools to perform completely and independently specific operations as required
• Reads, interprets, and machines moderately detailed and assembly components, jigs and fixtures as indicated on the prints, sketches, and /or other specifications 
• Fabricates moderately complex assembly and drill jigs 
• Changes, sets and adjusts tools as required 
• Determines, sets and adjusts feeds, speeds and stops on all machines in the facility within operation capability to maintain specified tolerances
• Be familiar with temperature changes caused by machine operations and the use of proper coolants.?
•  Have moderate knowledge of the machinability of metals.? 
• Grinds moderately complex cutting tools and drills
• Checks fixture using specified details and assemblies to see that dimensions are being maintained 
• Reports improper machine function and/or checks parts not being held to the proper dimensions
• Performs other related duties as assigned

Minimum Required Qualifications:

Knowledge, Skill & Ability:

• Knowledge of the machinability of metals
• Knowledge of temperature changes caused by machine operations and the use of proper coolants
• Mathematical skills
• Good written and verbal communication skills with the ability to write routine reports and correspondence, and to speak effectively
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals and blueprints 
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, verbal, or diagram forms. 

Education/Experience:

• High School Diploma or equivalent, and
• Three (3) to five (5) years related experience, or 
• Equivalent combination of education and experience

Work Environment:

• Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, electrical equipment, acetone, alcohol, argon, braze alloys, nitrogen, hydrogen, oil-based lubricants and cleaning solutions
• Occasionally exposed to moderate cold and extreme heat
• Noise level is usually middling

Physical Demands:  

• Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle or feel
• Able to communicate verbally and have the ability to hear 
• Frequently required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, and stoop or crouch 
• Occasionally required to sit
• Regularly lifts and/or moves up to thirty (30) pounds and occasionally lifts and/or moves up to fifty (50) pounds 
• Close vision ability
