    Housing, Dining, & Auxiliary Enterprises (HDAE) plays a vital role in the University's pursuit of excellence by providing a comprehensive array of essential services to students, staff and other customers. We operate on a 24-hour daily basis throughout the year. The scope of the services offered can be compared to those of operating a small city. The business of HDAE involves the entire range of services associated with the administration of that small city, including physical and capital planning, maintenance and upkeep, community supervision and safety, and support services.

    Our division provides housing to over 10,000 students, faculty and family residents on campus and support services for 9,500 students residing in the communities adjacent to the campus; serves 21,000 customers daily in our retail and board dining programs; manages the university's Campus Store, University Center and Event Center; hosts 150,000 guests annually for conferences and meetings; and oversees the administration of transportation, parking and fleet services.

    Brief Summary of Job Duties

    The Sr. Executive Director of Housing, Dining & Auxiliary Enterprises (HDAE) has responsibility for general oversight of multiple functions within the division including all Auxiliary Services. Serves as a senior member of the HDAE management group and is delegated responsibility for the entire division in the absence of the Associate Vice Chancellor. Represents HDAE to various constituencies both on and off campus overseeing a highly visible and customer facing external and internal audience. Serves as the divisional reporting point for the Campus Store, Conference & Hospitality Services, including The Club & Guest House; Transportation & Parking Services; University Center and Events Center Administration. Works with department Directors in defining and achieving departmental missions and goals, in problem-solving, in maintaining sound fiscal management, and in ensuring compliance with UC policies and procedures and state and federal laws. The Sr. Executive Director, Auxiliary Services plays a multifaceted role in HDAE. Performs a variety of managerial, supervisory, training, enforcement, and educational functions. Is responsible for policy development, fiscal oversight, and long-range strategic planning for the division as well as developing programs to meet the needs of students, faculty, staff and community members, in conjunction with meeting divisional priorities.

    Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
    • 4-6 years of strong supervisory and leadership skills with the ability to develop and communicate the organization's mission and vision.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • 4-6 years ability to establish and maintain working relationships with government agencies, community leaders, and the general public.
    • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times, stressful environment.
    • Strong leadership abilities to oversee multiple functions and departments through subordinate managers.

    Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

    HDAE Divisional Management - 40%

    As a senior member of the HDAE leadership team, the Sr. Executive Director, Auxiliary Services is responsible for long-range planning, fiscal management and policy development for HDAE. In partnership with the Associate Vice Chancellor and the Chief Financial Officer, ensures the continued financial viability of the organization's operational units through sound fiscal management and financial controls. Provide leadership in translating strategic and tactical operational plans across multiple departments into multi-year operating budgets, and prioritizing budget requests within the context of a campus plan. Advises the Associate Vice Chancellor, and in certain instances the Vice Chancellor of Administrative Services, on a wide range of complex issues requiring in depth knowledge and analysis of HDAE and departmental operations, and demonstrating excellent judgment, initiative, diplomacy, and political acumen. Participates in defining and implementing divisional programs, strategic planning, policy development, and issues response as a member of the Associate Vice Chancellor's leadership team. Provide programmatic leadership and input for implementing strategic plans, working with department directors, and campus senior leadership. May be called upon to speak and act on behalf of the Associate Vice Chancellor on issues, programs, problems, initiatives, crises, etc., that emanate from or have an impact on students, faculty, staff, the local community and programs within HDAE. In the event of a campus or environmental crisis, including those related to students or staff, the Sr. Executive Director, Auxiliary Services serves as an HDAE point of contact for coordinated response. The Sr. Executive Director, Auxiliary Services has delegated responsibility for the entire division in the absence of the Associate Vice Chancellor.

    Divisional Reporting Point - 50%

    Responsible for leading and managing a comprehensive array of services and programs through director-level positions. Provide effective and inspiring leadership by being actively involved in defining, measuring and monitoring objectives for programs and services, and developing a broad and deep knowledge of the organizations' programs. Promote a culture of high performance, lead the performance management process, enforce accountability, and develop leaders. Divisional management for and serves as the reporting point for the event operation functions of HDAE, which includes the Campus Store, Conference & Hospitality Services, including The Club & Guest House; Transportation & Parking Services; University Center and Events Center Administration. Plays a critical leadership role in large campus events such as Commencement, Deltopia, Halloween, Harder Stadium and Events Center concerts, and more. Works with department Directors in defining, measuring and achieving departmental missions and goals, in problem-solving; in maintaining sound fiscal management; and in ensuring compliance with UC policies and procedures and state and federal laws. Responsible for management-level decision making regarding departmental personnel, policies, and budget; supervises and evaluates departmental directors; and provides advocacy at the divisional level for departmental and programmatic needs. Ensures that each department provides an environment, services, and programs that encourage achievement by all faculty, staff, students and visitors in a diverse (racially, ethnically and otherwise) campus environment. Supports the campus's efforts to diversify staff and ensures an environment of equity and inclusion. Leads the departments in cross-departmental problem solving and discussion to initiate ideas, changes, and develop best practices.

    Community Relations - 10%

    Serves as liaison to the general campus academic and administrative offices impacting campus event activities. Develops and maintains effective relationships with campus partners and promotes communication and collaboration with faculty, staff, and students. Requires the development of excellent relationships with a wide variety of both on- and off-campus agencies, including law enforcement, environmental health and safety, county fire, and with county and city governments. Advises the Associate Vice Chancellor, Vice Chancellor, and other campus officials about the public relations aspects of proposed decisions and helps develop and implement public community relations plans necessitated by those decisions. Serves as a media spokesperson for HDAE as needed.
