GARDEN COORDINATOR: School Gardens for Elementary Students

Job Description:
To coordinate student/community activities for the CCD Program-Operation Healthy Heights (OHH) at Edgewood and Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary Schools (Muskegon Heights Public School Academy).
The focus of the activities will be to provide hands-on opportunities for students to explore the natural world, learn about growing and eating healthy food, and working cooperatively together. No gardening /agriculture experience necessary (though welcome). Most important is enthusiasm and experience working with children.

Compensation:
$15/hr stipend, up to 80hrs per month

Part-time contract position - May through September (5 months - some flexibility)
Duties and Responsibilities:
Coordinate the OHH team (head gardener, teachers, volunteers) to implement exciting and educational activities for students in the school gardens.
Organize appropriate nature, garden, and nutrition sessions for grades K - 5 using the existing Lesson Plan/Activities, including creating healthy snacks with harvested produce.
Outreach opportunities - help recruit children and families in the Muskegon Heights area to participate when school is not in session (establish drop in garden hours). Help develop innovative ideas to engage (i.e. outreach garden activities in various neighborhoods or at events).
Maintain the two school gardens when school is not in session (this can mean organizing volunteer schedule to help out with watering, weeding, etc - communication is key).
Keep accurate records of daily activities, attendance and numbers of students participating, hours volunteered by adults and high school students, and produce amounts (weight/amount of harvest and snack preparation).
Work with Garden Committee Chair to submit monthly reports to the CCD Board. Maintain regular communication with the Executive Director.
