Director of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

  • The Director of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion serves as the principal orchestrator of multiple, complex EDI initiatives in the Division of Student Affairs as part of Tulane’s Strategy for Tomorrow. The Division of Student Affairs, with over 225 staff in 14 departments serving 13,000 students, is a key organizational stakeholder in Tulane’s efforts regarding Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.

    Reporting to the Vice President for Student Affairs and partnering with the DSA senior leadership team, the Director of EDI works across the division to create welcoming and inclusive spaces where individuals of all identities, backgrounds, and experiences can thrive, have a keen sense of belonging, and achieve academic and professional success. The Director should be a strategic thinker and intellectual leader who collaborates with others to cultivate a shared vision of diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout the division reflecting and supporting the Division’s Strategy for Tomorrow Initiatives, the Division of Student Affairs’ Strategic Plan, and Tulane’s Core Values. The Director focuses on specific strategies in the EDI space through actionable, measurable solutions. The Director will identify key synergies that can emerge as 14 departments identify annual goals/initiatives related to diversity and inclusion focusing on an economy of scale that might allow for budget/cost savings and interdependent learning. The Director will ideally provide training, consultation, and coaching that advance the division’s efforts to recruit, support, and retain diverse staff, and student learners. The Director should also be comfortable with needs assessment and data analytics to support formative evaluation of existing programs and services.


    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities



  • Knowledge of university policies and federal laws and guidelines related to workplace discrimination.
    • Knowledge of best practices for the recruitment, retention, and development of a diverse workforce and a proven history of implementing effective recruitment and retention initiatives that build diverse communities defined by their sense of belonging.
    • Excellent interpersonal, writing and presentation skills; Comfortable using multiple mediums to communicate, esp. in the hybrid work environment.
    • Able to work collaboratively and independently in a rapidly changing organization.


Required Education and/or Experience



  • Master's Degree or Advanced Degree with 5 years as a Student Affairs professional or diversity, equity, and inclusion practitioner.
  • OR
    • Bachelor's Degree with 7 years of relevant experience


    Preferred Qualifications



  • Ability to demonstrate sound skills and experience in the areas of program planning and implementation, supervision, advising, assessment, and evaluation.
    • Vision, energy, strong organizational and leadership skills, proven experience in the creation and implementation of anti-racist training and programming.
    • Experience in strategic planning, especially in the realm of higher education.
    • Comfortable operating in a fast-paced work environment, with demonstrated ability and comfort to efficaciously manage multiple tasks and projects.
    • Experience developing, conducting, and evaluating comprehensive inclusion, diversity, and equity education or training programs and knowledge of leading practices for training and education in higher education setting.
    • Demonstrated success in developing innovative strategy and driving process improvements regarding diversity and inclusion issues in the workplace.
    • Experience working with college students, graduate students, and staff members regarding diversity, inclusion, equity, or access related initiatives, situations, or trainings.
    • Demonstrated experience driving change in an organization through building networks of stakeholders and campus-wide change agents.
    • Ability to manage sensitive situations with tact, professionalism, and care.
