    The Utah Department of Natural Resources, Division of Outdoor Recreation, has a region-wide seasonal position (no benefits) available based in Moab, Utah. This appointment will be full time (40 hours per week) from approximately May 6 through Oct. 31, 2024.

    Examples of Duties

    This position encompasses leading a trail crew under the direction of the Region Trail Crew Foreman. These trails include OHV, single track motorized, non-motorized, and Wilderness areas. Duties may include, though are not limited to, the construction, repair, and maintenance of drainage structures; brushing and clearing of trail corridors, safe felling of trees, dry masonry, carpentry, and rigging; leading the trail crew in the process of building and repairing log, as well as dimensional wood structures, this may include multiple stringer bridges, retaining walls, handrails, steps, as well as causeways; capable of fence building techniques as well as OHV barrier construction; planning laying-out, and selecting proper tools and materials for assigned projects; and following the direction of the Foreman with regards to scheduling the operational needs of the crew for assignments. This position requires heavy physical labor, carrying objects up to 50 lbs., and rolling rocks and logs both by hand and with the use of hand and power with tools. This position requires working in the backcountry, carrying a backpack in rough terrain, OHV travel, and may require carrying a backpack while hiking up to twenty miles per day. Projects are in mountainous, desert, and riparian terrain. Project sites may be at high elevation. An understanding and experience with mechanized trail maintenance procedures will be recognized, (training can be provided)

    Conditions of Employments

    • Must have an interest and desire to serve as a supportive team member while learning and performing trail construction and maintenance projects that contribute to safe outdoor recreation opportunities in Utah.
    • U.S. Citizenship required.
    • Appointment is subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
    • Technicians will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the Utah DNR standards. A uniform will be provided.
    • Technicians will be required to work away from home on occasion for multiple consecutive nights.
    • Candidates will be required to complete training and demonstrate competent operation of a four-wheel drive vehicle and multiple types of OHV craft.
    • If selected for this position you will be required to operate a State Government motor vehicle as part of your official duties. A valid Utah driver’s license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator’s License and Driving Record.
    • Successful completion of S-212 Wildland Fire Chainsaws or equivalent (this training can be provided after hire).
    • CPR and Basic First Aid Training will be provided.
    • Preference is given to applicants with GPS and/or GIS training.
    • Applicants must be at least twenty-one (18) years old or above. You must have graduated from high school or been awarded a related vocational certificate. College graduates that meet or exceed the Conditions of Employment will be given preference.

    Job Requirements and Skills

    To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:

    • Ability to perform the work of a Lead Trail Crew Technician position without constant supervision. Tasks include: leading a trail crew in the construction, repair, and maintenance of drainage structures; brushing and clearing of trail corridors, safe felling of trees, dry masonry, carpentry, and rigging techniques; leading a trail crew in building and repairing log and dimensional wood structures including multiple stringer bridges, retaining walls, handrails, steps, and causeways; and planning, laying-out, and selecting proper tools and materials and scheduling the operational needs of a crew.
    • Must have the ability as well as the experience to set up, live, and work out of backcountry camps. Applicants must possess the skill set to effectively support a trail crew in all types of inclement weather.
    • Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.
    • Demonstrate understanding of technical trail practices.
    • Knowledge of material needs for project completion.
    • Ability to interpret instructions and specifications, including blueprints and technical diagrams.
    • Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, and repair.
