The NYS Tax Appeals Tribunal (Tribunal) is seeking candidates for an Assistant Counsel position. The Tribunal is the appellate level of the Division of Tax Appeals, New York State’s quasi-judicial administrative agency charged with resolving formal disputes between taxpayers and the Department of Taxation and Finance.
The Assistant Counsel position is a full-time, permanent position in the Exempt jurisdictional class, which reports to the Counsel to the Tribunal. Under the direction of the Counsel, the Assistant Counsel researches and analyzes complex legal issues and questions raised in Tribunal proceedings. The Assistant Counsel is responsible for drafting preliminary decisions for consideration by the Tribunal, preparing possible questions for oral arguments, preparing confidential legal memoranda, and performing such other legal tasks as may be assigned by the Counsel. This position requires: knowledge of the New York State and/or federal tax laws; the ability to organize, analyze and interpret legal issues; the ability to write clearly and concisely and to maintain strict confidentiality.
