  • UFG is currently seeking a VP - Controller & Treasurer who will be responsible for the company’s accounting practices, maintenance of its fiscal records, cash and treasury functions, tax function and the preparation of financial reports.  The position involves supervision over general accounting functions. The Controller will be responsible for overseeing month-end close processes, financial reporting and analysis, and regulatory reporting functions.

    Responsibilities: 

    • Oversee accounting and financial reporting processes, including month-end and quarter-end close, accounts payable, accounts receivable, operating cash management, tax, financial review and analysis, accruals, account reconciliations, investment accounting and overall maintenance of the firm's accounting records
    • Responsible for preparation and review of consolidated GAAP financial statements as well as statutory financial statements
    • Responsible for maintaining and enhancing proper internal financial controls and processes. Ownership of enterprise control framework and consultant to business partners on internal controls.
    • Drive process documentation including writing, reviewing, and maintaining accounting policies and procedures.
    • Responsible for coordination of audits with external auditor
    • Ensure compliance with FASB, SEC and state regulation pronouncements and rules. Remain abreast of changes in the regulatory and GAAP frameworks that drive the regulatory reporting and financial functions
    • Review SEC filings and related internal reports
    • Correspondence with State Insurance Departments. Assisting with and participating in state regulator examinations
    • Actively lead and participate in enterprise projects and be required to recommend and implement ideas to improve the overall group performance
    • Provide oversight that sufficient funds are available for operating, financing, investing and other activities.
    • Evaluate/forecast cash flows for all companies within the consolidated group.
    • Coordinate with others on capital management to minimize risk and optimize balance sheet solvency.
    • Manage and drive positive outcomes with auditors, regulators, customers, and other relationships
    • Consistently strengthen the processes and outcomes of general ledger and accounting systems
    • Evaluate staff performance and provide feedback to employees.
    • Actively cross-train the team to provide back-up coverage for all team members

    Qualifications:

    Education 

    • Four-year degree in business/finance/accounting or related field
    • CPA preferred

    Experience: 

    • 10 years accounting experience from either public accounting or industry
    • Property & Casualty Insurance industry experience preferred.
    • SEC reporting experience preferred.

    Knowledge, skills & abilities:

    • Extensive knowledge of statutory and generally accepted accounting principles and financial statement preparation
    • Strong management skills and the ability to lead a team.
    • Knowledge of internal controls
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills with demonstrated effectiveness at all levels.
    • Demonstrated intellectual curiosity, ability to see gaps in existing plans.
    • Demonstrated ability to comprehend/explain various advanced financial concepts.
    • Ability to assimilate information and make recommendations based on a combination of factors.

    Working Conditions:
