Environmental, Health, & Safety Assistant

  • The EHS Assistant will assist the Environmental, Health and Safety Department in the implementation and enforcement of the environmental, health and safety program.

    Duties & Responsibilities:

     Injury & Claims

    • Coordinate employee work related injury care in-house and with company medical providers.  On occasions may have to accompany employees to occupational clinic appointments.
    • Coordinate light duty work with managers/supervisors. Communicate with managers/supervisors employee work status.
    • Follow up regularly with employees on light duty and off work, and ensure restrictions are being followed.
    • Be the liaison between occupational clinic, employees, supervisors, and insurance company.
    • Report work related injuries to workers’ comp insurance carrier. Gather all documentation needed to open a claim, and communicate regularly with carrier representative to ensure proper handling of claims.
    • Regularly communicate with the Human Resources Department regarding Workers’ Compensation claims and/or the search and selection of light duty positions for work-related injuries.

    Safety

    • Assist in the investigation of safety incidents, employee injuries, near misses and/or situations where safety procedures were not followed and complete the appropriate reports and/or other paperwork necessary.
    • Assist with the follow up after an accident, incident or near miss situation to ensure the appropriate corrective actions have been implemented to prevent recurrence of a similar situation.
    • Perform routine inspections of various life safety systems including, but not limited to, fire extinguishers, emergency lighting, emergency eyewash and shower stations and fire hoses.
    • Perform administrative duties related to department records and files.
    • Assist with the company Mass Text Messaging System.
    • Assist with EHS recordkeeping.
    • Provide support and assistance in the preparation, compilation and distribution of safety reports as needed.
    • Assist the EHS Department with administrative functions, such as setting up meetings with various individuals, departments and/or third parties.
    • Assist with inspections, assessments, surveys and program evaluations to identify potential hazards, and ensure compliance with all applicable safety and environmental rules and regulations.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Education & Experience:

    • High school degree required; some college preferred.
    • 2-3 years of experience in Occupational Safety.
    • Knowledge of Safety laws and regulations.
    • Experience conducting training
    • Workers’ Compensation Claims handling.
    • Experience with work related injuries, working with medical providers, and insurance companies 

    Skills & Abilities:

    • Bilingual (English/Spanish).
    • Intermediate to Advance Computer skills. Multimedia skills, able to create documents, posting, flyers using Publisher or similar software.
    • High Proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook).
    • Ability to effectively communicate with employees at all levels.
    • Effective and efficient at conducting trainings and orientations.
    • Basic medical, first aid, injury care knowledge.
    • Strong written and verbal skills.
    • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
