Our work is meant to support nonprofits and local governments who strive to ensure all Montanans have access to comprehensive healthcare, housing, and the rights guaranteed to them in the Montana and U.S. constitutions.

    The Government Affairs Associate will join the Central House team and participate in all aspects of client work, including client meetings, project strategy, and implementation. Every member of Central House Strategies contributes equally to projects, taking on a range of tasks from scheduling meetings to planning campaigns.

    Responsibilities of the position include, in full collaboration with a team sharing equal responsibility:

    • Legislative, executive, and administrative outreach, relationship building, and issue education;
    • Policy research and drafting;
    • Analyzing legislative proposals, identifying a position, and drafting testimony and other documents in support of that position;
    • Lobbying and testifying at the Montana legislature;
    • Client communication;
    • Meeting planning and facilitation;
    • Stakeholder outreach, development, and communication;
    • Coalition building and management;
    • Electoral and issue-based campaign planning and implementation;
    • Limited operations tasks; and
    • Developing and presenting training materials for organizations and individuals on policy issues and advocacy strategies.

    Required qualifications include:

    • A serious, long-term interest in building a career in policy advocacy and campaigns;
    • A commitment to pursuing projects that address the needs of Montanans, including LGBTQ2S justice, reproductive rights, criminal legal reform, safe and affordable housing, and a strong and fully-funded social safety net;
    • A law degree or degree in public policy or social work, or equivalent professional experience in a related field;
    • Familiarity with Montana’s political landscape and/or experience working on statewide or national campaigns;
    • Familiarity with both earned and paid media, including digital communications;
    • The ability to live and work in Helena, MT Monday through Friday during the legislative session;
    • The ability to travel both in-state and nationally;
    • A commitment to collaborative project work that includes Central House staff, clients, community-based organizations, private sector stakeholders, and policymakers at the national, state, and local levels;
    • The ability to manage multiple, complex projects simultaneously and switch gears, topics, and work types throughout the day; and
    • The ability to communicate directly and thoughtfully.

    Compensation and Benefits:

    • Salary range of $65,000 - $70,000 depending on experience;
    • Retirement plan with employer match;
    • Unlimited health and vacation leave with prior approval from employer;
    • A health insurance stipend of $500 per month;
    • 32 hour work week, with expectation of 40-60 hour work weeks during the legislative session;
    • Remote work structure, with expectation of Helena-based work weeks during the legislative session; and
    • End-of-year and legislative session bonus structure, depending on client load.
