JOB SUMMARY

Provides direct patient care within an assigned unit, under the direction of a licensed nurse, and other duties as assigned.

SPECIFIC ELEMENTS AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (* = Essential Functions)

1. Performs and/or assists patients with personal care including hygiene, oral care, bathing, grooming, and dressing. Performs and documents ambulation on the unit as required and directed.
2. Assists in data collection including patient vital signs, weights, and finger sticks. Reports unusual occurrences to the licensed nurse.
3. Provides general light cleaning of patient rooms, perform bed changes, and keeps the patients room free from clutter and presentable.
4. Assists in serving meal trays, assisting those patients that require assistance in eating, and documenting intake accordingly.
5. Ensures patient safety by keeping rooms free from clutter, completes effective hourly safety rounding, follows the facilities Fall Prevention Policy, maintains patient safety bed/chair alarms as directed.
6. Ensures that the unit is stocked according to established par levels with all required equipment and ready to care for patients. Assists in the care of unit equipment such as wheel chairs, walkers, or lifting devices.
7. Completes all required documentation in the EMR (please ask nursing to define what they document and then add that here).
8. Obtains required lab specimens such as stool or urine as directed by the licensed nurse.  Documents specimens sent out and results received in culture log book.  
9. Communicates in an effective and courteous manner with all co-workers, patients, visitors and providers as outlined by ERH Standards of Behavior.
10. Interacts professionally with patients and their families and provides explanations and verbal reassurance as necessary within the scope of practice
11. Maintains infectious control measures as ordered for contact precautions.
12. Transports patients, specimens and supplies
13. Maintains age specific safety precautions ex. fall, contact isolation
14. Arranges for repair of equipment

Hours:        Full Time, day shift. Monday - Friday.  Some Saturdays required.

Salary:        Base salary of $17.67 – $20.17 per hour based on experience.  Then add $2.00 per hour for C.N.A., P.C.T. or E.M.T certification.

Requirements

EXPERIENCE

• NYS Registry as a Certified Nursing Assistant, Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic, with a minimum experience of one year in a hospital setting preferred

EDUCATION

• High School or equivalent. Enrollment in Associates in Nursing Program or other medical related field preferred.

CERTIFICATIONS/SKILLS

• BLS certification required
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with care givers, other employees and the general public.  
• Ability to read, interpret and follow detailed verbal, written and illustrated instructions.
• Effectively operate various office equipment including copier, fax machine, computer and phone system.
• Ability to be flexible, organized and function well under stressful situations
• Must possess effective communication skills
