    Position Summary:


    The Sustainability Specialist works collaboratively with Gun Lake Casino (GLC) Team Members to develop and promote effective sustainability initiatives to reduce Gun Lake Casino's impact on Grandmother Earth. Responsibilities include participating in the update and implementation of a Tribal Integrated Waste Management Plan, leading GLC’s food waste recovery and recycling efforts, and strategizing and implementing future sustainability efforts.

    In this Role:

    • Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of sustainability efforts.
    • Recommends strategic changes to close gaps in the circular economy.
    • Builds relationships and partnerships with vendors to further sustainability initiatives at the property. 
    • Researches and implements projects for Gun Lake Casino to reduce its carbon footprint.
    • Participates in planning for recycling hub center.
    • Participates in Tribe’s Climate Resiliency Work Group.
    • Participates in relevant trainings, networking opportunities, and workshops. 
    • Participates in the development and update and leads the Gun Lake Casino’s implementation of a Tribal Integrated Waste Management Plan.
    • Oversees operational and maintenance planning, scheduling, and controlling of food waste recovery and recycling.
    • Provides technical direction, assistance, and training to Team Members.
    • Ensures that all SOPs are followed, and EPA, DOT, OSHA, and other requirements are met.
    • Trains Team Members on proper plant operations, repair and installation techniques, SOPs, and safe work practices.
    • Assesses and implements improvements to operating systems and SOP’s.
    • Prepares daily, monthly, and yearly data (DMRs, SMRFs, etc.) for review by Management.
    • Works with Leadership and Gun Lake Tribe Government Environmental Department staff to define sustainability goals and track performance metrics to assess program effectiveness.
    • Champions a multi-departmental Sustainability Team, developing shared goals and implementation steps to move forward sustainability efforts across Gun Lake Casino.
    • Implements and maintains sustainability training for Team Members and provides support related to food waste recovery, recycling, and other sustainability operations.
    • Communicates with Vendors and Guests related to Gun Lake Casinos sustainability efforts.
    • Maintains composure during challenging situations.
    • Promotes a culture of diversity, respect, and accountability.

    • Identifies and solves complex issues. Develops innovative and creative solutions.
    • Follows all company policies and SOP’s.
    • Delegates prioritize and manage the work of others.

    • Interact with Guests and vendors in a friendly and courteous manner and handle all Guest opportunities.
    • Must have knowledge of SDS booklet location(s) for your area. 
    • Ability to communicate effectively with Guests, Team Members, and Management in both written and verbal form.  
    • Maintain excellent grooming and uniform standards. 
    • All other duties as assigned.

    Essential Qualifications:

    • Must be at least 21 years of age.
    • Associate's/Bachelor’s Degree in environmental studies, Environmental Management, Environmental Engineering, Sustainability, or equivalent experience in related fields in lieu of degree.
    • Valid Driver’s License requires and must pass a Motor Vehicle Record Check; CDL license preferred but not required.
    • Forklift operator certification or must obtain/maintain upon hire

    Physical Requirements

    • Must be able to frequently lift 50-60 pounds; load, unload, and move large equipment and tools.
    • Ability to sit, walk, and stand for the duration of shift.
    • Ability to access all properties and areas.
    • Ability to read, write, and input data into the computer.
    • Ability to stoop, crouch, and kneel.
    • Ability to operate recycling equipment and heavy machinery.

    Work Conditions:


    Duties may require working in in harsh weather conditions including regular exposure to wet and/or humid and other outdoor weather conditions. May work in extreme levels of temperature, air pollution, and chemicals. Work areas may be warm, cold, or noisy. Frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts and other potentially hazardous equipment and materials. Tasks may be performed from a sitting or non-sitting position in a confined area.  Team Members may be required to stand, walk, lift, reach, push, pull, and grasp.
