The City of Lancaster Public Works Department is currently accepting resumes for a Sustainability & Environment (S&E) Intern. The S&E Division administers Stormwater Management Bureau and the Climate Action Plan, including the City’s award-winning Green Infrastructure program and Urban Forestry. The primary objective of this position is to assist with work in the development and maintenance of GIS systems and related information systems.
Candidates with interests pertaining to sustainability, green infrastructure, stormwater management, climate action related initiatives such as renewable energy and environmental justice are encouraged to apply.
Work Schedule:
40 hours per week, 8 hours per day, Monday through Friday.
The workday will begin between 7:00 am and 8:30 am and end between 3:30 pm and 5:00 pm, depending on department needs and assignments of the intern. Most workdays will be 8:30 am - 5:00 pm with a 30-minute lunch break. Potential opportunities for evening and weekend work with flexible scheduling possible. Some fieldwork may be required.
This internship is expected to last for 16 weeks between the period of May 2024 and September 2024 depending on the candidate's school schedule and availability. Internship may be extended into Fall 2024 (full or part-time) depending on performance of the candidate and the needs of the Public Works Department.Tasks can include but are not limited to- data collection
- data management in Excel and GIS,
- updating asset inventories
- record and drawing file management
- public engagement, and administrative duties for the Public Works Department.
- Education, Training and Experience:
- Graduation from High School or completion of a GED is required.
- Sophomore or Junior enrolled in geographic information system-related field such as Geography, Cartography, Engineering, Planning, etc.

Licenses and Certificates:- Possession of a valid Pennsylvania State Driver’s License is required.
- Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans.
- Basic understanding of environmental issues in urban contexts, ecosystem services, and community development.
- Knowledge and familiarity with the effective use of computers, equipment, and software, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Proficiency with ESRI’s ArcGIS software platforms including ArcMap, ArcPro, ArcGIS Online, Collector, etc.
- Knowledge of drafting software such as AutoCAD or AutoCAD Civil 3D is beneficial.
- Detail oriented and able to identify workflow efficiencies.
