    DESCRIPTION

    In alignment with UC Health climate commitments and the UC Sustainable Practices Policy, the Director of Sustainability and Energy is responsible for strategic planning, implementation, and reporting on programs and projects in policy areas addressing sustainable energy, climate resilience, water conservation, waste reduction, sustainable food, clean transportation, sustainable procurement, and system-wide engagement.

    The Sustainability department is growing, and has a current team of five staff and four student fellows, and works closely with the Medical Director of Sustainability, executive leadership, staff and faculty, integrating sustainable principles into how we make decisions and provide patient care.

    The Director applies sustainability expertise to research, identify, develop and implement institutional sustainability efforts for the University and Health System. Establishes metrics for measuring sustainability program performance across academics, operations, and engagement. Manages and/or performs the highest level planning to establish UC as a leader in the field of sustainability at the state, regional, national, and international level.

    Key Responsibilities:

    * As a recognized expert, provides high quality advice and consultation to all levels of management at all UC locations on energy and environmental design, sustainability best practices, research, rules, and regulations.
    * Conducts and oversees independent research; leads coordination and reporting on a wide variety of highly complex issues relating to sustainability. Researches and implements new and emerging practices for assigned areas.
    * Serves as liaison and internal consultant to administrators to address strategic, long-term sustainability initiatives. Consults with Deans, faculty and researchers to develop and enhance sustainability focused curriculum and research.
    * Develops action plans and leads efforts for implementing sustainability practices/ programs in green building, climate action, clean energy, waste diversion, and water action. Integrates sustainability principals across all operational functions of the University.
    * Regularly leads and conducts complex and varied analyses of issues with broad impact on the University's sustainability program. Develops goals and metrics to evaluate progress toward goals and cost- effectiveness of programs.
    * Develops marketing campaigns and communication strategies to provide awareness of sustainability, energy management, and resource conservation programs. Oversees website content and design.
    * Plans, develops and implements programs, policies, guidelines, best practices, financial incentives and support services for sustainability projects and initiatives. Ensures LEED guidelines are met in University construction projects.
    * Develops and implements strategies on integrating sustainability principles into University curriculum. Supports curriculum development, research, and certification/ degree programs in sustainability.
    * Serves as sustainability spokesperson. Represents the University, campus and/or medical center on external boards and committees. Represents the University, campus and/or medical center at professional conferences, through media inquiries, leading tours for national and international visitors, and other avenues.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    • Bachelor’s degree in related area and seven or more years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of experience, education and training.

    • Expert knowledge in the area of health energy and environmental design, sustainability management policies, issues and initiatives.

    • Expertise in U.S. Green Building Council rating systems.

    • Expert knowledge of policies and procedures in the areas of design and construction; purchasing; contracts, grants and gift processing; building codes, and regulations.

    • Expert knowledge of planning, staffing and leading cost-effective sustainability focused programs.

    • Advanced ability to foster collaboration across diverse constituencies, guide negotiations and manage change.

    • Highly developed verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.

    • Expert ability to use data to generate benefit-cost ratios, track progression, and develop recommendations to facilitate decision-making.

    • Highly proficient in all software applications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, Access), database applications and management.

    • Expert ability to present ideas with impact.

    • Expert ability to lead, engage and motivate groups to meet common objectives.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Master’s or advanced degree in a relevant field of study.

    • Five or more years of experience in sustainability and energy within healthcare and acute care/hospital setting.

    • Expert knowledge and experience with climate action and resilience planning.

    • Expert knowledge and experience leading energy efficiency and clean energy programs.

    • Expert knowledge and experience integrating green building and sustainable procurement strategies.

    • Expert knowledge and experience in change management and process improvement strategies.

    • Expert knowledge and experience in Project Management.

    • LEED Accredited Professional

    • ISSP Certified Sustainability Professional

    Pay Transparency Act

    Annual Full Pay Range: $112,100 - $216,500 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

    Hourly Equivalent: $53.69 - $103.69

    Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
