Executes orders and reviews documentation to ensure accuracy, proper record keeping, and compliance to regulations. Being a Trader (Retail Municipal Bonds) evaluates market volatility and ensures clients receive the best rate available. Establishes connections with other dealers to ensure inventory of bonds is maximized. Additionally, Trader (Retail Municipal Bonds) requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager. May require state licensure. The Trader (Retail Municipal Bonds) contributes to moderately complex aspects of a project. Work is generally independent and collaborative in nature.     Welcome to the City of Roanoke's Municipal Volunteer Program. The city encourages citizens to get involved and participate in the development and enhancement of the city and the community in which they live and work. Participation as a volunteer will not only enhance your knowledge about the city, but also enrich your life and greatly benefit our community. All volunteer opportunities are unpaid.

    Required Skills & Abilities:
    • Ability to follow directions and guidelines as assigned by a supervisor or a supervisor's designee.
    • Ability to communicate well with others and work in teams.
    • Be inclusive and possess the ability to work well with people from diverse backgrounds
    • Ability to multi-task and be flexible when working on work-related assignments
    Requirements/Qualifications:
    • All Volunteers must adhere to all City rules, regulations and policies, either published or in effect by custom and usage, and all rules, regulations and laws of the State of Virginia as may be required by City and State statutes.
    • All Volunteers will be subjected to a  background check, including criminal record, driving record, past employment and volunteer history.
      • All Volunteers age 14 and above shall be required to take and pass a criminal background check and drug screen.
      • All Volunteers under age 14 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian during the entire duration of the volunteer opportunity.
    • All Volunteers must complete the online application.
    • All Volunteers must submit a monthly Volunteer Time Sheet.

    Areas of Interest
    There are volunteer opportunities available throughout the City of Roanoke. Below are some of the volunteer opportunities available:
    Various City of Roanoke's Departments/Agencies
    • Clerical Assistant (Ongoing)-The city's departments will occasionally need short-term assistance with various clerical tasks. These may include reception, data entry, mass mailing assistance, filing, and other tasks. Since this position is not regular, the volunteer would be given opportunities when available. Dates and times will be during usual operating hours of Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m..
    Various Boards
    • In addition to volunteering in city departments, volunteers are needed to serve as members on authorities, boards, commissions and committees appointed by the City Council.
    Public Library
    • Library Assistant (Ongoing)-Library Assistants may help out at different library branches including Melrose, Gainsboro, Williamson Road, Jackson Park, Raleigh Court, and Main Library. Library assistants may help with reshelving books, assisting patrons in locating items, assisting with technology related questions, and leading or assisting with programming. Various skill levels needed for different tasks. Hours can be flexible, and availability will vary based on branch.
    • Virginia Room Assistant (Ongoing)-Volunteers in the Virginia Room can serve a flexible schedule; perfect for students, busy parents, or just about any schedule! Volunteers may help with research requests, scan photographs and documents for inclusion in our digital image collection, or participate in one of our many indexing projects that make it easy for patrons to find what they're looking for! If you're interested in genealogy, history, learning more about Roanoke, or just want to help out in a casual, friendly environment, the Virginia Room may be right for you.
    Parks and Recreation
    • Front Desk Attendant (Ongoing)-Are you interested in helping children in your community? The City of Roanoke is looking for customer service superstars to help out at the front desk at Preston and Eureka Recreation Centers! These centers offer after-school and summer camp opportunities for children in Kindergarten through 5th grade. Volunteers should be comfortable working with children and the public. Volunteers will be responsible for assisting staff and processing payments. This opportunity is available Monday - Friday from 2 p.m. - 6 p.m. Whatever time you might have available within that time frame would be appreciated.
    • After School Program Aide (Ongoing)-The Parks and Recreation department provides after school care to elementary school students from 2:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. The program is held at Grandin Court Center, Eureka Center, and Preston Center. Volunteers are needed to help with homework, decorate the bulletin boards, serve snacks, play educational and video games, lead exercise classes, and other activities. Volunteers should have experience or a desire to work with young children. An interest is education or counseling is a plus. Volunteers can serve when this program is offered during the school year and throughout the summer.
    • Trail Builder (Ongoing)-Are you interested in learning more about our trails at Carvin's Cove and Mill Mountain? Would you like to be around other outdoor enthusiasts while making a difference? Hours are flexible and no experience is necessary. Volunteers can be under 18 but should be accompanied by an adult. Contact the volunteer coordinator for more information on this opportunity.
    • Painter (Ongoing)-Painters are needed to help beautify areas in the City including ball field locations, portions of the greenway, and various parks. These projects can be completed individually or as a group project. Hours and dates are flexible.
    • Mill Mountain Discovery Center Garden Aide (Ongoing)-The Parks and Recreation department is looking for some assistance at the Mill Mountain Discovery Center. This volunteer would assist with landscaping and gardening at the Center. Volunteers should have knowledge of gardening and/or landscaping. Ability to use basic garden/landscape tools is preferred. Ability to carry and move objects up to 50 pounds is required. Hours and dates are flexible.
    • Adopt-A-Park-Participants will be required to adopt for a minimum of two (2) years, with a minimum of four (4) clean-ups per year. Participants are encouraged to have one (1) cleanup in October to coincide with City sponsored clean-up events routinely held in October.

    • Adopt - A - Park: Did you know that any local community organization, business or individual over the age of 18 is eligible to adopt a park, plaza, Greenway or trail? All you need to do is commit to organizing four park clean-ups per year for a minimum of two years. Roanoke Parks and Recreation can provide your team with trash bags and safety vests to borrow, and even help your team haul away trash bags if given notice in advance.
    Public Works
    Adopt-a-Street Program
    As a part of the City of Roanoke's "Clean and Green" initiative, civic and community groups, business organizations, and even families have joined the "Adopt-A-Street" Program to help reduce litter along the roadways, and make a major contribution towards the city's overall appearance and beautification efforts.

    Roanoke Arts Commission

    • The Roanoke Arts Commission offers volunteer opportunities with its Collections and Placemaking Committees. Depending on the committee, members help care for and build the City's Public Art Collection or help build a stronger Roanoke by guiding community-driven, artist-led and equity focused neighborhood projects. Assignments are aligned with the personal skills, curiosity and learning goals of the volunteer.
