Traffic Supervisor supervises employees who make deliveries to and from specified locations. Oversees transportation activities including route assignments, route delivery, and account processing. Being a Traffic Supervisor schedules drivers and assigns routes to maximize productivity and ensure compliance with DOT regulations and company rules. May require a bachelor's degree. Additionally, Traffic Supervisor typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. May require a CDL license. The Traffic Supervisor supervises a small group of para-professional staff in an organization characterized by highly transactional or repetitive processes. Contributes to the development of processes and procedures. Thorough knowledge of functional area under supervision. Traffic Signals Technician
  • City of Las Cruces

  • Performs the installation, troubleshooting, maintenance and repair of electronic traffic signals, school flashers, and related systems.

    ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS

    Majority of work is performed outdoors with exposure to all weather conditions, traffic, dirt, dust, noise, fumes, odors and electrical hazards.

      

    PHYSICAL FACTORS

    Moderately physical effort involved; ability to perceive colors is critical; lifting and carrying items weighing up to 80 pounds; operating a concrete saw weighing 500 pounds; climbing, balancing, reaching above shoulder height; using a two-way communication device; safety equipment includes helmets, face masks, safety shoes, aprons, gloves and goggles. 


    WORK SITUATION FACTORS

    Emergency call-out status, shift work and overtime required. Position involves competing demands, performing multiple tasks, working to deadlines, occasional work beyond normal business hours, and responding to customer issues.  Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity of services.   Position is subject to drug testing in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations and City of Las Cruces policies. 


    DOT REGULATIONS REQUIRE DRUG AND ALCOHOL TESTING AND RELEASE OF INFORMATION FORM (49 CFR PART 40). 


    FIRST CONSIDERATION MAY BE GIVEN TO CURRENT CITY OF LAS CRUCES EMPLOYEES WHO MEET THE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS.

    Full-time, regular, non-exempt, union represented position.

    This position is graded at BC09.
    • Checks field operation of control equipment and operation and condition of electronic devices.
    • Maintains and makes field and shop repairs to traffic signal equipment.
    • Maintains traffic device data base; downloads timing changes to ensure safe traffic operations.
    • Under the guidance and direction of the Traffic Signal Crew Leader, installs and maintains arterial traffic signals; troubleshoots electrical problems; troubleshoots underground wires; installs conduit systems including pulling wires; ensures adherence with guidelines/standards governing installation and maintenance of traffic signal systems; programs, maintains and repairs school flashers.
    • Under the guidance and direction of the Traffic Signal Crew Leader or Traffic Signal Technician Senior, interprets electronic schematics for field changes in signal phasing.
    • Pulls wire through underground conduit; connects to traffic control devices.
    • Cuts traffic signal loop detectors; checks intersections for proper vehicle detection; checks cameras and auto scopes and repairs as needed; constructs concrete foundations for signals and school flashers.
    • Assists in the monitoring of the traffic signal computerized system.
    • Checks signal systems along railroad routes; meets with railroad officials to discuss system operations.
    • Maintains records of repair, maintenance and installation of signals, flashers and other electronic devices.
    • Performs underground locating activities as needed.
    • Performs vehicle counts for traffic studies as needed
    • Performs activities related to traffic signals and other electrical control devices on a 24-hour emergency call status in accordance with Traffic Engineering Standard Operating Procedures.
    • Performs graffiti removal as needed.

    Equivalent to a high school diploma PLUS three years of experience in the electrical field is required. Associate degree in Electronic Technology or related field is preferred.  A combination of education, experience, and training may be applied in accordance with City of Las Cruces policy. 

    LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

    Valid Class D driver’s license is required; Class B commercial driver’s license must be obtained within twelve months of hire date; valid EE98J New Mexico Journeyman Electrical License must be obtained within eighteen months of hire date; IMSA Work Zone Certification and IMSA Level I Traffic signal Certification must be obtained within twelve months of hire date.  Position requires an acceptable driving record in accordance with City of Las Cruces policy. 

    General knowledge of:  Electronic testing and diagnostic instruments; automatic traffic control devices; computer software; construction techniques regarding traffic signals; tools, equipment and general practices of construction; hazards and necessary safety precautions involved in working with electricity and in working in and along the roadways; methods, materials, and equipment used in the installation, maintenance and repair of traffic signal equipment; Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices and pertinent signal manuals.
     
    Ability to: Interpret electronic circuit schematics and diagrams; perform technical reading and writing; perform record keeping; discern colors; understand and follow oral and written instructions and to work from plans and drawings; perform preventive maintenance program procedures; establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, fellow employees and the general public; operate a motor vehicle and navigate across even and uneven surfaces.
     
    Skills in:  The operation of various types of construction and maintenance equipment.
