Training Director directs the design, planning, and implementation of corporate training programs aligned with the objectives and strategy of the company. Collaborates with functional management teams to assess ongoing and future training and development needs as well as effectiveness of established programs. Being a Training Director develops a program delivery schedule that provides training as needed and in locations that work for the participants. Provides engaging communications about program information to encourage participation and highlight the value and benefits of training. Additionally, Training Director approves new training techniques and suggests enhancements to existing training programs. Oversees and establishes relationships with vendors to provide additional outside training programs. Manages and develops training professionals. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to top management. The Training Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. To be a Training Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function.     The Program Director-Personal Training/Wellness is responsible for developing, administering and supervising personal training and wellness programming for the assigned location(s). The Program Director-Personal Training is required to spend 75% of their workweek (or minimum of 30 hours) on the floor performing Personal Training. The remaining hours per week will be spent on administrative processes and managing Personal Training staff for success. The Program Director, Personal Training will position the YMCA of the Iowa Mississippi Valley as the leader in Personal Training in the community.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: Responsible for supervision of all personal trainers and wellness staff at assigned locations.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    1. Serve as a role model to members, Y staff and, at all times live the mission, vision and values of the YMCA movement.
    2. Maintain a positive attitude and act in a professional manner when interacting with members, program participants and other staff at all times.
    3. Adhere to and ensure all dept staff are knowledgeable in all branch emergency procedures and carry them out when needed.
    4. Hire, train, evaluate and supervise all personal training and wellness staff.
    5. Create and manage the personal training and wellness schedules to include individual, group training and/or special population programs.
    6. Maintain fitness equipment and report any damaged equipment.
    7. Verify that member has completed all necessary paperwork prior to starting a workout.
    8. Introduce new participant to members and work on making connections and building relationships.
    9. Maintain phone/email contact with participants in the Personal Training program and/or special population programs.
    10. Able to perform full fitness assessments at all skill levels, evaluate the outcome and write appropriate exercise prescriptions based on goals and ACSM guidelines.
    11. Promote all health & wellness programs to members, program participants and staff.
    12. Listen and respond to complaints and suggestions calmly and courteously.
    13. Process and monitor payroll for all program staff.
    14. Develop, manage, and monitor Personal Training program operating budget and meet or exceed budget targets.
    15. Ensure health & wellness staff are staying within their scope of practice.
    16. Report any accidents, concerns, or equipment issues to supervisor immediately; contacts center director/executive director and completes appropriate paperwork.
    17. Return all equipment and supplies used to proper location after each session. Set a good example to other members by treating equipment with respect and cleaning it after each use.
    18. Keep all work areas clean and organized.
    19. Participate in and solicit others to participate in necessary YMCA financial development efforts, specifically the Annual Campaign.
    20. Maintain certifications listed under Certificates and Other Requirements.
    21. Adherence to all policies and procedures of the YMCA of the Iowa Mississippi Valley.
    22. Understand and follow all safety rules and regulations including knowledge of emergency procedures and location of emergency equipment.
    23. Regular and timely adherence to respective schedule/meetings.
    24. All other duties as assigned by the Branch Executive.

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

    1. Bachelor's degree in exercise science or related field.
    2. Prior supervisory experience is required
    3. Prior personal training/fitness/wellness and customer service experience required.
    4. Must possess general health and wellness knowledge including biomechanics, anatomy, nutrition, injury prevention, cardiovascular and strength training principles, coaching skills and basic machine and facility maintenance
    5. Minimum of 2 years experience training clients.

    CERTIFICATIONS AND OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:

    1. Must be able to pass background check
    2. CPR/First Aid/AED certification - must have prior to hire
    3. Nationally Recognized Personal Training Certification (AFAA, ACE, NSCA, NASM, NFPT, or ACSM certification)

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS: This position is expected to be able to successfully perform all physical activities necessary to perform essential and related functions of the position including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. This position is expected to be able to demonstrate all training aspects of a workout which can be described as medium to strenuous work and will vary by client. Must be able to frequently lift a minimum of 45 pounds efficiently and safely. While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to talk and/or hear. The employee will regularly be required to see at close and distant vision, have good peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of the job, the employee will primarily work indoors and regularly be exposed to moderate temperatures and perform work near moving mechanical parts (associated with physical fitness equipment). The noise level can vary from quiet to moderate depending upon the usage and activity in the rooms in which they are working. This position works in a variety of environments which can include but are not limited to, office settings, gymnasiums, and outdoors. This position works a varied work week as determined by the needs required to manage operations and events of which can include working evening, weekend, and additional hours to accommodate activities representing the organization and branch operation.

    EFFECT ON END RESULT: The effectiveness of a successful Program Director will be reflected in steady growth and retention of members, program participants, and individuals involved in the YMCA of the Iowa Mississippi Valley programs. The Program Director will impact the community's understanding of the Y and its missions.

    This position is primarily concerned with ensuring quality programs and building positive long-term relationships with participants. This program area is viewed as a resource to the total association as it strives to meet its mission and goals. Therefore, successful fulfillment of this position should be measured by:

    1. Continued growth of the budget, and program enrollment.
    2. Achievement of branch operating objectives.
    3. Increased utilization of volunteers in YMCA programs.
