Translator translates written and spoken information from one language to another. Reads, comprehends, and rewrites materials in designated languages following established linguistic rules related to word meanings, sentence structure, grammar, and punctuation. Being a Translator must be well versed in vocabulary dealing with specialty. Must follow ethical procedures and policies that protect the confidentiality of information. Additionally, Translator may require a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. The Translator gains exposure to some of the complex tasks within the job function. Occasionally directed in several aspects of the work.     Job Summary (2-3 sentences describing job purpose): The Parent Outreach Translator will interpret verbally and translate written documents from one language to another for School and District staff in order to ensure parents receive School and District information.

    Reports to: Coordinator of Translation and Interpretation Services

    Primary Job Duties/Responsibilities : List, in the order of importance or time spent, the essential duties/tasks performed by the position. This is not an exhaustive list and employees may be assigned additional duties by management as required. Regular and reliable attendance is an expectation of the job.

    Job Duty/Resp. 1:

    Directly assist Non English Language Background (NELB) parents in assigned schools in person, via phone, and via email.
    Job Duty/Resp. 2:

    Assist Administration at all MNPS schools with contacts, conferences, and meetings. Officially interpret at IEP Special Education meetings for all assigned schools; translate documents particular to each assigned school. Assist parents with Grade Speed.
    Job Duty/Resp. 3:

    Assist with home visits, accompanied by another MNPS or Metro Employee.
    Job Duty/Resp. 4:

    Assist in increasing parent participation of school events and activities by personally notifying families and inviting families by letter, phone, and/or e-mail.
    Job Duty/Resp. 5:

    Assist with recording the call-outs in the native language to phone numbers of school families.
    Job Duty/Resp. 6:

    Assist in updating Emergency Card information and maintain current address, phone numbers, and other information for all assigned schools. Provide new information to school office and EL office as needed.
    Job Duty/Resp. 7:

    Coordinate and keep a work schedule with the EL Office; keep a work log and send it to the supervisor monthly; keep a calendar updated and visible for the supervisor.
    Job Duty/Resp. 8:

    Assist the school in building a rapport with international families.

    Instructions: Fill in all blanks and dropdowns. Kronos access questions must be completed for payroll.

    Education and Experience Requirements

    Education (training/degree): Required minimum: High School Diploma or GED

    Experience Requirements: A proficiency test translating English to native language; develop effective, accurate and grammatically correct written text for a variety of audiences. Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point and Publisher). Preferred: A minimum of two years' applicable experience performing language translation duties, including proficient reading, writing, and oral communication in both English and the native language.

    Licenses, Certifications or Registrations Required: None

    Skills Required: Establish and maintain working relationships with others; organization and prioritization; work independently and as a member of a team; deal effectively with international parents and children. Preferred: Experience with Exceptional Education Terminology.
